Does having a pacemaker affect any prostate cancer treatments - scans, radiation, taking any drugs etc.

It can affect whether MRIs are allowed. I have a pulse generator for my brain, and cannot have an MRI. Some people with MRI-compliant pacemakers are allowed up to 1.5 T. Check with the manufacturer before an MRI. There are no restrictions for PET/CT, bone scan/CT or CT.

Thank you so much Allen,

I am very sorry you had health challenges as a pulse generator for your brain sounds very serious.

it definitely doesn't seem to affect your intellect though!!

I trust you are well now?

sincere thanks and appreciation for all you do for us.

It was deep brain stimulation for essential tremor. I am delighted with the results - my tremor is completely gone. I enjoy being a cyborg. :-)

That's wonderful, TA! My dad has essential tremors and isn't a candidate for DBS because of other health issues.

As I stated in the other thread on this topic:

When I was at Radboud for the nano-iron MTI, Doctor Barentz related to me about another patient from the Chicago area who had a pacemaker. Dr. Barents was leery of using his 3T MRI on him, so the man flew in his private jet to Nijmegan, had the infusion, both flew back to Chicago where the man had a doctor who knew how to do MRIs with his pacemaker. So somewhere in Chicago there is a doctor who can handle it.

Good morning and how are you today?

Thank you for sharing your knowledge and I will be aware of this when seeking to do an MRI.

I do wish all is well with you and you are in good health.

Best wishes, Mike

I’m on my 2nd cardiac pacemaker. Have had the new one for 7 years. It’s a bit smaller and much more sophisticated than the original, but it is not an MRI compliant model (some of the really new ones are), and I cannot have an MRI. I can do all non-magnetic scans (PET, CT, etc.), and I can have radiation, chemo, and all other oral and injected drugs without restriction.

Good morning and how are you?

I will check into my pacemaker being MRI compliant.

Now day 10 after having the pacemaker put in and I have more energy. So it's a good thing.

I do hope you are well and keeping happy and fit.

Best wishes, Mike

Hi Mike,

It sounds like your new pacemaker is settling in for you nicely. That’s good to know. It won’t be long and you will be so comfortable with it that you will rarely be aware that it’s there, or when it’s actually kicking in. It will be your new best friend. 😎.

Thank you for the encouragement. It takes a bit of getting use to but as I feel so much better and with more energy, it is worthwhile already.

Best wishes to you and good health. Mike

My husband had a pace maker put in August that is MRI compliant. After that he had chemo and will begin Lut-177 this week. He is still getting Lupron and takes Xtandi. So, no limitations on treatments, scans or MRI's. Although, Mayo Clinic wants a special team to do the MRI incase anything should go wrong.

Good morning.

Thank you so much for your reassuring reply. I appreciate you sharing with me as I was concerned.

I do wish your husband the very best results from the Lu 177.

If you don't mind me asking, where is your husband getting the Lu 177 treatment.

Sincere thanks and all best wishes. Mike

Mike,

Glad to see your pacemaker helped you.

My husband is getting his Lut-177 in Omaha. First treatment went well.

Hoping for the best!!

Thank you!!

We are very pleased with Dr. Luke N. The first Dr. of many to sit down with us for 2 hours and explain my husbands cancer and treatments available and what's is coming. Also gave us his personal cell phone #. He and his staff really care. If you haven't seen him I would encourage you to do so.

Best wishes to you in your treatments!

Dr. Luke is a good old fashioned caring doctor in the nicest way. He would be my oncologist if only he weren't so far away!! I have him on my radar for sure.

All best wishes for a positive outcome with the Lu 177.

Thank you so much for sharing. Mike
