I don't know about black seed oil but I DO know that there is a clinical trial in progress in Denver where they are checking to see if Grape Seed Extract stops or slows PSA advancement..They would not be doing this without some motivation. Of course, some of that motivation is coming from the company that makes a specific kind of grape seed extract..
There was a 2006 clinical trial on grape seed extract to slow PSA rise. The overall goal of the study was "to identify plant-derived phytochemicals to reduce systemic inflammation in subjects with advanced cancer." I was in another trail this MO was running, but never heard the results. In general, this MO was a big proponent of dietary changes that reduced inflammation. The nurses there said he was the MO that worked with late-stage patients. He had a real interest in trying alternative therapies in an effort to slow down the disease, in addition standard of care therapies.
I take enough supplements to raise the dead, but none so far as resulted in a cure. But I think they have helped to slow down the cancer progress. I have been taking these supplements since Dx in '13. I don't think any can hurt you, they may help.
It's funny that a number of products have "Black Seed" on the label, as though the seed used is irrelevant. Part of the problem is that it is often misnamed, so less confusion if unnamed? e.g. it is not black cumin. The seed is actually Nigella sativa, although many know it under a different name. Penzey's sells it as Charnushka [1] It is also known as Kalonji.
I had a post on seeds 2 years ago [2]. Nigella is covered in section 5.
It is of interest in PCa due to the Thymoquinone content.
I have read that "black seed oil from coriander is used in some of these studies. Nigella sativa is fennel. Sounds like they are both sourced for thymoquinone.
Five years ago I had prostate removed. Felt lousy and failed on Lupron. Had my balls removed and continued on Casodex. Casodex failed. PSA started to rise. Oncologist said it was very aggressive. Said I had one to three years. Put on Xtandi which was just approved in July for non-met castration resistant prostate cancer. PSA immediately plunged. Two months ago after it got down to 0.12 my doc. said come back in three months. She does not use Zitiga plus prednisone any more because Xtandi is a real break through drug. Still have to nap often and get worn out quickly doing any kind manual work but feel MUCH better than when on Lupron. Ask your doc about Xtandi. It is becoming a first line standard of care. AND please do not fall for any supplemental crap. There is NO empirical evidence that any work. No replication. No double blind studies. Mostly anecdotal. Save your money. I stopped looking at this site because of all the crazy unsubstantiated claims. I was trained as a scientist. I know snake oil when I see it. Good luck.
