Black Cohosh Research

In a post discussing hot flushes, a couple of members said they used black cohosh. When I started researching it, I was surprised to find research abstracts showing that it killed prostate cancer cells in vitro and in mouse models. I’d never heard of using it for hot flushes or a possible adjunct treatment

Since this is the day before thanksgiving, I’m in a vacation mindset and not wanting to do a lot of research. I tried to search for previous discussions on the forum, but couldn’t figure out how to do that. A there some discussions Of black cohosh that I can read?

We started looking at it as an old folk medicine for women and menopause. Hot flashes suppression is good. It it kills or slows cancer too, great... Megace with black cohosh root eliminated my hot flashes. Too bad it also affected my driving. My wife didn't like me using rumble strips on both sides of my traffic lane while driving.

I haven’t heard of those side effects, and don’t know anything about megace. Which one do you think caused the problem?

Hi Javelin18,

Good question about finding info.

On the right side of the very top line of any of the HealthUnlocked forum screens, there's a box that says "Search HealthUnlocked". Type Black Cohosh and click on the magnifying glass. You'll get almost 2,000 hits.

Alan,

Thanks for explaining that. Eow 2000 hits. I didn’t realize how deep the knowledge base is.

Be careful what you wish for.

Way lots of info here... Just click on a poster's picture and then check out their profile. Some like mine will give you way more info than you really wanted, but I just keep adding to it as life goes on... Still on Black Cohosh Root. Life Is Good, especially when comfortable.

Hi Javelin 18,

When we lived in the UK we had a really good traditional chemist, he was also a homeopathic specialist. He recommended black cohosh for my wife, he mixed it for her and she would put several drops into a glass of water and she was cured of those hot flashes.

Interesting about the effect on cancer, I didn't know that ! I am now going to research into black cohosh for myself, I'm sick of the hot flashes every night.

Good luck in your research.

Thanks, I think I’ll post a survey of the research once I’m done, so others can weigh the pros and cons. The cancer effect was shown in mouse models, so always hard to say if it will work in the incredibly complex human body.

I’m also finding reports of adverse effects. Sime of the adverse effects were reported from other countries. One report noted that the formulations aren’t standardized, and could be contaminated with other components, or even be from a different plant species.

I also saw a summary by Dr Weill that said there are adverse reactions with lipitor, so I’m holding off until I find out more.

Thank you for replying to me, I've done some research today and I have to admit that the findings for and then against, as always made me reconsider my actions.

I'll await to see what else you find when you throw it to lions on this forum.

Kind regards.

Thanks Javelin18, I would love to see a summary of your findings. Love all the knowledge and info on this site, but sometimes it is overwhelming to try and wade through it all.

Herbs and Supplements

I have read today that Black cohosh root or Blue Vervain can help !! I know there is no solid cure as I do have custom hearing aids that help me a lot but when I take them out at night my tinnitus likes to wake me up at 5 or 6 am every morning. Thanks for reading this post.

Chinese herbs - so far, so good!

We are in lockfdown here in UK so I searched online for suppliers of Chinese herbs and mail-ordered the three that are recommended: white peony, black cohosh and cramp bark. The author of the article recommends 20 drops of each, three times a day, specially at bedtime.

HRT or Natural Treatment for perimenopause

I am seeing that a combination of supplements such as Black Cohosh, Agnus castus, Ginkgo Biloba perhaps can do wonders and would like to understand how successful others have found them to be too. Thanks in advance
