When you went to get the Ga 68 PSMA scan was there any issues with your insurance company covering the cost? I have had problems getting this scan covered by my insurance company and today I called to discuss with a case worker at the insurance company. The case worker was a retired nurse oncologist so she was very helpful in presenting my case to their 3rd party company that does their approval process. I was told this is a $6,000 scan. I hope to hear so good news soon because I feel I can't wait much longer to treat my persistent cancer after my RP surgery in June. At least my bladder issues are improving over this period before radiation begins.
Some trouble with insurance since 68 Ga serum is not FDA approved. They covered the scan part with no issue and eventually covered the 68 Ga serum. I was told $1,200 if serum was not covered.
I got the PET/CT Axumin scan finally approved by Insurance company on Friday with a peer to peer review after 2 denials. It isn't easy dealing with these delays but I was building up my bladder control after surgery and before radiation treatment. I just got the PET/CT scan a few hours ago and it took 1.5 hours in the device to complete it. I had no complications with the radioactive tracer Axumin and look forward to seeing the results with my Radiation Oncologist at Hopkins on Thursday. Once we find where the remaining cancer is hiding (PSA of 0.9 after surgery) they can recommend my next treatment. Hopefully radiation in the pelvic area only if that is where it is still contained after surgery. I will know this Thursday. Thanks to my friends on this forum for encouraging me to find even more expert specialists in this cancer fight. 2nd opinions do help and I even had a 3rd ready to help me at NIH.
