Blood in Urine??

So we are on our 4th hospital stay in the last 60 days. My dad is 71 with stage IV. Mets throughout pelvic area and lower lumbar. His blood counts are low and he has had consistent blood in his urine since Supra Pubic catheter was placed.

Last hospital stay, the urologist scoped his bladder and cauterized a bunch of areas. There was no blood for 2-3 days. Then it came back and gradually worsened.

Now they are suggesting a hyperbaric chamber and Vitamin K infusions.

Does this sound crazy?

Well, hyperbaric chamber can be used to promote wound healing.

You indicate that his red blood cells are low, & this may limit the supply of oxygen to the problem area. I am muddy on what a hyperbaric chamber can achieve if the lungs are doing their job. But perhaps your dad is not achieving maximum oxygenation through breathing?

Vitamin K is one of many things needed for normal coagulation. They presumably suspect a deficiency. Has he been on a blood thinner?

No blood thinners but he has received several transfusions. I am thinking maybe there’s damage from radiation causing the bleeding and since his hemoglobin and platelets are low it’s just not healing?

My husband had the same problem. The blood in his urine was exacerbated by a bladder infection. A 10 day regimen of Bactrim would take care of it. They said it was also common after pelvic radiation. He had this problem for a few years after radiation, it scared the daylights of him to see blood in his urine, but he has not had this problem in probably 10 years. The presence of a supra pubic catheter could also contribute to the blood in the urine. Hope your dad improves soon! Aloha.
