I’m trying to find good travel insurance for Chuck who is planning a fly fishing trip in October. As a Stage IV survivor on Xtandi we know things can change rapidly. Any recommendations on policies for travel insurance? Any tips? This is the first time we are purchasing it. Appreciate any feedback. Charline.

Travel Insurance
It’s difficult to find one without pre-existing condition limitation. I usually start with worldnomads.com. I also check “ united healthcare travel insurance.”

Hello Charlene,
We've used credit cards that offer travel insurance up to $5,000. I know we've had cards like that from Chase Freedom and Citi Mastercard. These do NOT do what the medical travel insurance plans do in terms of paying emergency travel and medical expenses. However if Chuck gets sick before the trip and can't go then, even if he's got non-refundable airline tickets or hotel reservations, these cards can help recover those costs. We used them to recover costs when I got a pinched nerve, couldn't walk for some months and had to cancel a vacation.
Also check with your main insurance carrier (Medicare? United Healthcare? Blue Cross? Aetna? whatever) There's a good chance that Chuck's policy will cover medical costs anywhere, at least anywhere in the U.S.

Great idea. I forgot about travel benefits using credit cards. Main insurance is thru Kaiser Permanente with Medicare. I’ll check into it there too.
I have had experience with UAL refunding me most of the "change" fee when I had to change flights because of medical treatment. There is a form that the doctor needs to fill out for this to happen and it can take several months to rectify the charges, but they did accomodate me. Sometimes treatment arrangements are made that have to be changed.
Good Luck
We do a lot of traveling, domestically and internationally, and you need to go to insuremytrip.com and compare policies. we are using travelinsured because they have a 21 day period for insuring nonrefundable expenses after you've incurred them. You need to be in a condition to travel when you get the pre-existing condition package and make sure you insure all the nonrefundable expenses. Also make sure you have enough insurance - if you are traveling internationally, $100,000 for emergency medical evacuation would not be excessive. Compare policies based on your individual situation and read the terms carefully. There are several good policies around and I'm sure you can get one that suits your situation - we've never had a problem finding one.
Be advised Medicare does not cover any medical expenses outside the United States so even if you're going to Canada you need additional insurance.
Good Morning ChuckBandChar,
I am a veteran and use trip insurance offered through USAA. They have a relationship with an insurer. Like Chuck, I have been Stage 4 since diagnosis in 8/12.
Have filed 4 claims over these years, and have always been reimbursed in full.
Best wishes. Never Give In.

Here in the UK, we have Insurancewith.com, who will insure you with advanced PCa at a reasonable cost. There online questionnaire is very comprehensive, an£ they ask all the right questions. I’ve just got insurance for my wife and I for a trip to Dubai for our 50th wedding anniversary for £275. Not cheap, but nowhere near the £2700 I was quoted by a mainstream insurer.
I've used the following place for my last flyfishing trip to a fly-in Alaskan lodge. They are helpful and can get you a policy suiting your individual circumstances. Was recommended by member of my flyfishing club that does a lot of in-country and international travel good luck.
Check this link:
Gives you quotes from multiple top rated companies with reviews. Allows comparison of plans and allows you to select "pre-existing conditions exclusion" from a list of filters on the right side.
I'm travelling to Germany this year and plan on using this site to find insurance. Top rated plans for my 3 week trip will be around $250-$300.
Thanks! I will take a look at the site. Have a wonderful trip!
