Testing for BRCA Mutations.

This is a new video release [1] but might have been recorded in September in Madrid at ESMO.

I was interested the see that two of the speakers are from the Royal Marsden Hospital where much important research has been done. The gentleman doing most of the talking is Johann de Bono, & here is a snippet from his ESMO bio [2]:

"Professor de Bono’s research interests are rationally designed molecular targeted therapies and prostate cancer. He works in the clinical drug development Phase I trials program at the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust Hospital, and he has been involved in the early clinical development of more than 100 novel agents—many of which are now approved drugs, including abiraterone, MDV3100 and cabazitaxel for advanced prostate cancer. He led on the first-in-man studies of olaparib that first demonstrated antitumour activity for PARP inhibitors in BRCA carrier patients. Professor de Bono has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed articles and several book chapters."

Interesting discussion.

Thank you for posting this. My tissue currently is being tested for BRCA mutations. I should receive the results in a week or so, and will watch these videos closely.

Thanks Patrick! That is very helpful.

Univ. of Penn is running a genome study for those with PCa. I got involved when I heard that Penn had partnered with Virtua Hospital, here in South Jersey.

I was tested for the Braca 1 & 2 mutations, and also had a ProstateNext test done. Unfortunately, this test only looks at 14 genes, as opposed to other genetic tests, like Guardant360, which test far more. When my results came back negative, I was a bit let down. But, that's good for my family members.

We should all raise a glass to professor de Bono. Some people really make a difference in this world.

Thank you Patrick. I have been told by my dad's oncologist at MSKCC that the 12 core biopsy slides for my dad are not good enough to determine if Braca1 and Braca2 mutations exist, and a new biopsy now would not be accurate because my dad is already in his 5th month of treatment. I wonder if anyone knows of other possible ways of obtaining this information?

Wishing all the BEST (keep up the fight),

Robert O.
