Fluoride is essential for the body, most notably for teeth, but is also believed to be used by the body in healing bone fractures.

It has been proven that too much fluoride over a long period of time is bad for health. Recommended levels she adults is 3mg for women and 4mg for men, but is much lower for children (just 0.1mg for babies).

How much is too much? 10mg for adults... That's just 3 times the recommended amount!

One study I found showed that it can be harmful at 38.5mg. That's about 10 times what it considered adequate for adults.

My dad has had problems with weak tooth enamel most of his life, and he believes it was because he grew up on American military bases overseas, and that the water on those bases was over fluoridated. (My dad is smart and well informed, but I'll admit that he also believes some conspiracy theories that I have to take with a grain of salt. But this fluoride belief of his does seem be match what research says.)

Normally, an unsafe amount of a nutrient is at least 10 times what the recommended amount is for good health.

The neurological effect of prolonged excess fluoride is typically said to reduce IQ (and according to conspiracy theories, it makes people more susceptible to suggestion, by which the conspiracy theorists imply "easier to control"). The IQ effect is proven. The "control" claims are not backed by any research findings that I'm aware of.

.....

I don't think that I've been exposed to excessive fluoride, but the research on over fluoridation sometimes makes me wonder. My dad is very intellectual, and I like to think that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. (I regard myself as intelligent.) So, if my dad's and my IQs were reduced by excessive fluoride...then I guess we were both both to be geniuses. (I'm happy with my intellect, as it is. I don't feel like I've been cheated in the mental capabilities, except as far as my ADHD and anxiety hamper me.)

I don't think fluoride should be in drinking water - toothpaste is enough. Cavities are caused by diet - sugars & carbs are the culprits. Sodas like coke also weaken tooth enamel. You can get toothpaste with hydroxyapatite in it which remineralizes teeth - something fluoride doesn't.

Thanks for mentioning hydroxyapatite. I had not heard of it before.

I agree that water should not be fluoridated. I've read enough about places that have put too much into their water, and the kids all have weaker teeth (and sometimes weaker bones) as a result.

From what I've read Hydroxyapatite toothpaste is commonly used in Japan. Also it doesn't have the toxicity problem with swallowing fluoride toothpaste ( which is why there's a warning on the tube.) For this reason it would be good for young children. Anyone concerned about fluoride could switch to hydroxyapatite toothpaste & still have confidence that it's protective & strengthening for their teeth.
