Therapist recommendations?

Does anyone have any advice on finding a good therapist? I was recently diagnosed with ADHD and have been seeing a psychiatrist, but I am wanting someone to talk to weekly. I asked my psychiatrist for recommendations but everyone he suggested either wasn’t taking new patients, didn’t take my insurance, didn’t believe in ADHD, or just never responded. I have only had one therapist before and he was not very helpful. I went to him when I was beginning to suspect I had ADHD and he told me that I should just join more clubs. I am also female and bisexual, and it’s very hard to find LGBTQ therapists. It seems like all the good therapists are unavailable because of the surge in mental health issues from COVID. I am worried this will just become another task I put on my list of things to do and eventually forget about. It’s very frustrating that having ADHD makes it harder to get help for ADHD! I am vaccinated and able to see someone in person, but am also interested in online or phone counseling. Please let me know if anyone has any recommendations for therapists or ways to find good ones. Thank you!

Hi, lrhg01.Hoping you were able to find some answers as its been 4 mos since your post. But just in case- I’m still trying to find a therapist myself & tbh it’s been a bit if a nightmare.

BUT, I can tell you that if you go to psychologytoday.com there is section right at top of page where you can search for therapists in your area. The really good part is you can set requirements/filter to include your sexuality, race, system of faith, etc. & only therapists who work with that population will be listed.

It’s hard to find a good therapist in general. And we all need to find someone you feel safe with. Hope this tool helps you with that!
