Work Accommodations for ADHD

Thank you for supporting a newb! I have a question. Has anyone asked their employers for work accommodations or even told their employer that they have ADHD. I have the inattentive type, so it is not so obvious. My dr. told me to ask for accommodations, but I don't even know what to ask for, and I'm really hesitant to tell them.

I have always been very open about my diagnosis to my bosses. People can usually tell after a while that I have it without me saying because I am combined type... so I can be VERY energetic and always on the go. Depending on the relationship you have with your boss, I would say it’s always good to let them know. If you are wanting formal accommodations make sure to put the request in writing for documentation purposes. You can ask for things such as frequent breaks and advanced notice for deadlines so that you are able to plan appropriately. It really just depends on what you feel you need. If you struggle with anxiety and don’t feel comfortable around others you could also ask for a private work space.

What types of things are you struggling with at work? I would approach it by thinking about what would be most helpful to you in being able to be more productive in your job. For example, do you need help prioritizing tasks? A quiet environment without distractions to focus? More supervision to help with deadlines and accountability? Here’s a list of possible accommodations/strategies that may be helpful in the workplace that may help: caddac.ca/adhd/wp-content/u...

Personally, I would tread carefully here and consider asking for accommodations informally, without disclosing your diagnosis, at least initially. For example, you can talk in general terms about what you need to be more productive, without mentioning ADHD. Of course, if your manager balks at that, you can look into applying for formal accommodations, but I wouldn’t necessarily start there. Good luck.

My manager is the one that discovered I had ADHD. I didn’t know that existed until she asked if I have ever been diagnosed with ADHD? And I responded no, and if she was joking? That’s when I did my research and decided to look for help. After I confirmed to her that I did have ADHD, treatment was slightly the same but at times she would tend to ask if I forgot to take my meds on days I would miss a thing or two, or treat me like I was a liability. In my opinion. No! Unless you truly need to!
