Any advice to focus the spacy beast? Academic woes of a Master’s level student with ADHD

Hello! I was diagnosed with ADHD just short of a year ago and would love to get better in touch with the community to learn about how to deal with it! I’m on concerts, but there are still some challenges... I’m currently studying for a Master’s degree, so staying focused, starting reading assignments, and meeting deadlines are a real struggle!

Hi, thejoshhomie;

Welcome to the group. I am not currently doing my Masters yet, but seriously looking at one (MBA).

Yes, studying and staying focused on the projects was difficult for me too. Some things that I do now for learning include putting a schedule in place. It works for me, and might for you too.

In the morning, I do my meditation first. 8am

2. Have breakfast 8:45am ( doing keto- so usually make it)

3. Workout (eliptical 35 min then pilates mat routine 40 minutes)

Both meditation and exercize promote focus, and well being.

Using either a paper calendar or electronic one, schedule yourself reading assignments. For example, thejoshhomie must read chapter 1 from 9am - 10am on May 2nd.

For deadlines, you could put them on the calendar, and count backwards to how many days you'll need to complete it. (Be realistic, no one can do everything in 1 day!). And give yourself extra time, in case something needs to be revised.

Putting structure around your daily schedule really helps you stay focused. I also use post it notes to remind myself to do things. I put them on the frig, and on the side of my computer screen.

There's also a helpful article in ADDitude Magazine all about studying, etc in college. Here's the link: additudemag.com/surviving-s...

Hope that these ideas help you some. Stay positive!! You can do it!!
