Autism and ADHD, anyone?

Hi all,

Recently diagnosed in March 2020 and learning something new everyday in this time of self discovery. Sorry in advance for the long post, but please hear me out.

My main concern at the moment is my occupation. Does anyone have any advice or tips for those with autism and adhd and employment? Im currently a nurse, i have sensory issues, social difficulties and so on, those mixed with adhd symptoms its extremely draining. 12.5 hour shifts alongside being mentally drained takes it toll. I sleep A LOT. Ive recently started night shifts to attempt to help my sensory and social difficulties but i still feel like im not thriving.. One of my main problems is i feel i need to complete one task prior to starting another otherwise i feel extremely overwhelmed, although i deal with it very well because ive become accustomed to this after 26 years. However, since being diagnosed i realise how much all of this is taking its toll on my body and my wellbeing.

Any advice or stories from those in similar situations would be great. Thank you so much in advance.

Ox

My sister in law is a nurse with ADHD, I know she struggles. Do you have accommodations at work? Doing one thing at a time was vital for me, I had to get accommodations in order for my boss to adjust my workload (I worked in healthcare HR)

Thank you for your reply. Its hard. And when you say accommodations do you mean workplace adjustments? If you do, i havent , i wouldnt know where to start or what to ask for.

You contact your human resources department and let them know that you have a disability. Accommodations are workplace adjustments, they can be things like a reduced workload, shifting responsibilities around, assigning you more time to do things, etc.
