I have ADD and so does my son.how do I manage my time and get everything done
Hi Diz,
I am working on that to, lists don’t work for me. I got the app suppose to use the Eisenhower method..... 4 squares urgent important ... urgent not important.... not urgent important and finally not important and not urgent..... problem is I don’t see it so it doesn’t work either, but I have a planner/calendar hard copy.... yes real paper.... on the front cover I started to use stick ups.... I write the first square stuff on a different stick up and stick it on the outside of the book.... the final stick up is simply next square. Once I finish a task I chuck the sticky unless it’s a repeated task like check credit cards.... then I put it in the planner for next time it needs to be done.... I don’t always get everything done. But since I see it, I can try to get it done...
Key points:
Everything goes in the paper planner.
The planner is ALWAYS with in my reach.
Electric calendar is the copy of the paper planner.
Most important thing
Keep trying different ways until you find the one that works for you.
Good luck
Welcome to the group
Welcome to your son too.
I have found that having one place for your schedule is better than multiple places because now you don’t have to maintain each place that can be tedious and more room for error of forgetting to put want one thing and one thing not the other. Also same goes for making a habit to look at your schedule one stop is better for me. I decided to use a app calendar it syncs with my phone and tablet. I always have my phone on me wherever I go so for me it makes the most sense. I do like to have one spiral bound notebook for my thoughts. Again keeping only one. In the past I was doing that and it make hard to find stuff
I don't know, if you find out can you share your secret with me though please? 😂 I never make lists because I find that I forget to add things to my list and forget to do/buy those things. I try to do things as and when they occur to me and if I have to do something I make sure I prioritise that above less urgent tasks. It's not foolproof and I never manage to do everything I need to do but that's how I get the most important things done in time. How to ADHD videos on YouTube are full of lots of useful tips but I find that although I like the advice and it makes sense when I'm watching them, I forget some of what Jess says and therefore have trouble implementing the techniques she recommends. Good luck finding something that helps you x
I have watched how to ADHD as well on YouTube but I swear it's on more videos I watch the more confused I get.she includes so many videos it gets overwhelming LOL
I think my biggest problem is prioritizing
I learned about different lists on the forum. I’ve been using Wunderlist 🗓 and really like it. I make different lists and do a brain dump 🧠 of all that my mind thinks I need to do. Then when I see it all before me, it helps me prioritize. 🎯
You can put due dates and reminders 🔔 in for things that REALLY HAVE TO get done. One of the most helpful things to notice is that the mind will create all sorts of tasks trying to be helpful. 🤹🏻♀️ A friend pointed out it’s more like a menu...just pick what feels important and some things that are appealing. 🥦❓🍔❓🌮❓
The most important part for self esteem is to BE REALISTIC. Aim for 1-3 ⚠️IMPORTANT⚠️things a day in manageable chunks. And not “do taxes for last three years” but “30 minutes of working on taxes.” ⏳ This will help you feel empowered 🤸🏽♀️and more likely to want to come back the next day and check off more things. ✔️
You can also repeat items ♻️ that need to be done frequently or over time 🕗 and star things that HAVE TO get done right away.‼️ Best yet, it works on desktop and smart phone so easier to read and prioritize (literally drag things up and down on list. ↕️)
Be kind to yourself.❤️ If things feel hard to prioritize ask yourself “what will happen if this doesn’t get done today?” And REWARD YOURSELF (even celebrating getting one thing done that you had put off by telling a friend.)💥💃🕺🏼That’s A VERY IMPORTANT piece for ADD.
Good luck!🍀
PS Turn off auto play on YouTube...easy to get sucked in and overwhelmed!
I am downloading Wunderlist right now
Let us know how it goes! I find being active in a group of people with similar issues helps me to be more accountable. Others may even be inspired to try it, if Wunderlist works for you : ) Good luck!!!
That's great -- I'll keep my eyes open for your posts : )
I just ordered a bullet journal and I hope it’s as good as they say. I need help with this, too.
I tried that it didn't work for me. I'm hoping that the Wunderlist will work
If you haven't already, I suggest watching How to ADHD's video(s) about bullet journals. She gave the best explanation/how to that I could find after some extensive searching. Plus she gives tips to make it even more ADHD friendly.
I still have a few notebooks but they’re easy to tell apart cause they’re so different. I’ve been using my bullet journal since May and I’ve gotten up to page 35 already. I use it for scheduling, to-do lists, budgeting, random ideas that’s I want to organize, and some other things. I also started a sticker page in the front that I add to whenever I complete a to-do. Overall I’ve found it to be super helpful. Hope you find it as helpful as I have.
Hi Dizkrssy, I tend to put a bit more on my schedule than I can handle, but I manage to get some of them done. The rest get rolled to the next day, if I don’t get to it then, I keep it rolling until it gets done. It really is a whole lot better than I used to be, when nothing got done.
