Child recently diagnosed with adhd

Hi, I'm a mother to a sweet 9 yr old boy, who was recently diagnosed with ADHD. So this is unfamiliar territory for me. I've joined this group to hopefully get helpful information on how to navigate/ help our son and us with this recent diagnosis. In the past year we have noticed that he has a hard time focusing and sitting still with certain tasks at home and school which makes it difficult for him to accomplish said tasks. (Schoolwork, chores etc..etc..) He gets frustrated very easily which leads to behavior issues in school. His adhd is in the low to moderate range and we're really trying to avoid medication. If you have any tips or suggestions on what might have worked for you, please share.

Thank you so much!

my daughter’s psychiatrist suggested the supplement Rhodiola to help with focus before we tried medication. It is made in gummy form. She has strong adhd and autism so we have gone with medication but it might be helpful for you.

The 2 "tips" I can give you is tell your child you love him as often as you can.. In addition to telling him I love him, I would tell him I do not accept his negative behavior and I hope tomorrow he would make different choices. The second tip is.. when it is working... it will work. Once we got medication, therapy and an educational plan it all started working for him.

Things get better as these kids gain maturity and where he is today is not where he will "end up"..

Kids with ADHD don't wake up in the morning planning to be bad.

We are always here for you..if you get a chance read older messages especially when you are faced with something.. someone on her has most likely posted about it..

Big hug.

Thank you for this response! This is all new to my husband and myself, we do have him in therapy to hopefully provide tools to help him in those moments of him getting upset/frustrated. We are also receiving tools to help within the home.

HI, Jmn13,

Thank you for contacting CHADD National Resource Center on ADHD. We recommend learning more about ADHD, and we have many resources here that can help. One important suggestion is to maintain a consistent routine, along with therapy and family therapy. Below are some resources that might be helpful.

I took my kids to school and I noticed the farther away I dropped my kids off to the entrance of the school, the more positive feedback I received from their teachers. Just a little bit of exercise before school helped them do better. I prayed a lot too.

We had a recent diagnosis too (5 yr old boy) and we are not doing medications, we have started neurofeedback therapy and we are seeing positive results from that. Also, like stated above, shower your kiddo with love, positive reinforcement and be their biggest cheerleader!! Focus and celebrate all of their positive qualities, as often as you can.

not meaning to hijack Jmn13's post, but would you mind chatting with me about neurofeedback therapy? i'm on the fence with starting it for my 12yo daughter, and am just curious about changes you are seeing.

Hi-jack away, I am to very curious about neurofeedback. We don't want to do medications, but we are completely lost right now and it's not getting better. It might be our only solution. I do understand that every child is different and reacts to treatments differently.

I'd be happy to give you my perspective, which is good so far. We are 6 sessions in and am already seeing positive behavioral changes. It's not covered by insurance, so paying out of pocket but I have heard so many good things and have a lot of faith it'll be a positive change for him and us. here is my email: love2cook4fam@gmail.com

Thank you for the response, I've been doing research with our insurance and its unfortunate that insurance doesn't cover this type of therapy. I will definitely be looking into this for our son. It's worth a shot!

Some supports that are helpful for our 7yo with intense ADHD: sitting on a large exercise ball during meals or whenever he's needing to be in one place to complete a task, crash pad in his room to throw his body on so he won't crash into us, allowing him to move, walk, dance, lay down during meals, giving him a Bluetooth speaker and podcast stories anytime he needs to sit still or be more calm, I haven't tried this one yet but want to: getting a stationary pedal bike thing that can go under the table so he can move while sitting still, screen time during meals.

Not what you're looking for?
