I was just wondering if there were any good sleepaway camps for kids with ADHD. My son is 10 yrs old and I think he would benefit from a camp that specializes in working with kids with ADHD but that also has an educational component. There is so much academic loss during the summer, but I also want him to have new experiences where he can burn off energy. I see some online but I'm in the NY tri-state area

Sleepaway camps for kids with ADHD

I haven’t tried it yet but this is on the list for my son when he is a bit older. camp-sequoia.com/about/ I think I discovered it on here so maybe do a quick search on the posts to see if feedback comes up.
Thank you. It seems great and I spoke to the director who was really nice. They just don't have a structured educational component. They said they can work with him if I send content but I was really looking for something that is a consistent part of the schedule.
My daughter has both ADHD and dyslexia, so she attends a camp that is half day academics and half day camp. It's not sleepaway, and I'm not sure if it would apply to your son, but your post made me wonder if such a camp exists. A quick Google search led me this this YMCA camp in NJ - fairviewlakeymca.org/summer...
I know the Hallowell center has family ADHD sleepaway camps...that cost a fortune and probably have waitlists. Their site might be a good place to look as well.
Lastly, I have heard of free sleep away camp-finding services that may be helpful. I don't have a name, but it's been in the back of my mind to look into this. I'm hoping there are options that even my high-anxiety-11-year-old may one day feel comfortable attending.
Here's the name of a camp finding service: thecampconnection.com/
A friend of mine used it last year to find a camp for her child that has high anxiety and autism.
My son goes to a special needs camp in Texas called Charis Hills. I wonder if you called they would give you a referral for something closer to your area?
Ok thanks I'll reach out to them.
thank you for your input
We aren’t in your area. But here are some suggestions we do at home. We follow a strict morning routine in the morning. We make breakfast together. We do morning exercises. We color, paint and do crafts. We do Scholastic highlights workbooks and go to our local library to check out books to read at home. Our local library has free activities once or twice a week and we do their summer reading challenge. Barnes and Noble has one as well that sometimes we do. We have lunch at the park and have them play. We do group swimming lessons these are all summer long. We do day camps only for one week June (camp from school like robotics or writing) and July (our local science museum has Lego camp, Minecraft coding and junior paleontologist). We make dinner together and do our night time routines. We literally crash and repeat. Hope this helps.
Our kid has gone to and loved Camp SOAR. There are many locations and have camp for kids of many ages. It is NOT cheap and my kid has enjoyed their time there. One thing I was disappointed about is I thought they would work on executive function skills. Largely, they didn't, but also, EF skills come with age -- eventually. Also, while the counselors are vetted and are good at what they do, they are not necessarily skilled at kids with ADHD specifically. So take it with a grain of salt.
