advice for a desperate mum

hi mum nearly 7yr old daughter was diagnosed ADHD at 6 and started medication we have recently increased this and that has meant the consultant has sent out a review form to the school.

the teacher who has filled it out has never seen my Daughter unmediated but has filled out the form which now suggests he doesn’t have ADHD and my argument is she won’t see this because she on the right dose and at the moment is well managed. Which has resulted in the consultant asking us to stop medication for a few weeks so they can re assess which I will of course do my my concern is that this teacher isn’t the best at diagnosis because I know of 3 other parents that have tried to get a referral through her been denied and then moved up a year and been referred straight away almost. I’m worried that she going to end up getting discharged and have to repeat this process of referring again and I’m just wondering if I can request for the consultant to wait till the new school year in September and request a re assessment from the new teacher

Hi ADHDmumof2.

On the evaluation form there should be a check off box indicating if the child was medicated or not medicated at the time of evaluation. If you can get the initial evaluation form prior to medication and compare it to the new evaluation form showing your daughter’s ADHD being controlled on medication this should support your decision to continue your daughter on medication and reassess in September. Good Luck.

I not sure if that was on the forms I’ll have to ask the consultant it’s the Conner’s questionnaire that we did which we got the diagnosis and this is the first review

When we were awaiting our first consultation, we were given one form for us , one form for school to complete. They were totally different answers. Consultant said he expected that as a lot of masking goes on in school and then at home we get meltdown. The teacher is not a specialist diagnostician. I would hope the Consultant is aware that the person who completed the form has no knowledge of your child. Why was this not given to the class teacher? We had to stop meds as child was experiencing weight loss. We waited 8 weeks for replacement- you know what? School aren't noticing much change medicated or unmedicated! Masking again. BUT child still has ADHD and Consultant won't be changing diagnosis, or if this is suggested we will get a second opinion. It is not up to the teacher to decide. Can you flag it up to the Senior Management Team? Ask that someone who knows child well completes another form . It's your child you know them best.

thanks for the reply it was the teacher that did the form but I really don’t think she is great at understanding it I know of 3 children were the parents were trying to get a referral and she wouldn’t agree when up a year and there all now diagnosed. I’m hoping I can push past it and the consultant understands that she masks well and I’ve started to write a daily report to document what she like at home as well
