Hello! My 8yo son was just diagnosed with severe ADHD. He has already been getting some accommodations in the classroom but our 504 plan meeting is in 10 days and I am looking for some other ideas of accommodations to ask for. If anyone can share any that has helped their kid in elementary school, I would greatly appreciate some ideas!
My son specifically struggles with independent work and organization.

I found some great ideas by searching thru google and CHADD website. If you feel comfortable in doing this ask your friends including old classmates on Facebook. One of my old classmates is actually an OT who also teaches about therapy. 504 plans varies from school to school that I've found such as what they'll put in the plan especially if they have the staff for it. And the staff is willing to follow the 504 plan. Thank goodness my son's teacher's is the one that got the ball going and is very supportive thru all of this. She even pushed the 504 plan team to stay on top of it as they have 90 days from start to finish. And who wants to wait 90 days for their child to be further behind schedule. Remember YOU as the parent is the voice for your child, so don't be afraid to speak up or have someone you trust go along who also understands and knows your child. Last, 504 plans can be adjusted as much as you want, which is great as nothing is set in stone as an IEP plan does.
It sounds as though you are noticing that his executive functioning skills are most affected by his ADHD at school. There is a really great resource put together by a school district that breaks down EF problem areas and possible accommodations/strategies to help. Depending on how successful your child is with accommodations alone, keep in mind that you can ask for a full evaluation to determine needs for additional skill teaching through an IEP. Accommodations and medication can sometimes be enough to resolve school difficulties. For other kids, however, other underlying issues need to be addressed through teaching a child specific skills (e.g., emotional regulation/sensory/fine motor through OT, social skills/pragmatic language through speech, executive functioning through sped, etc.) Good luck at your meeting!
