Looking for gifted and academic testing for 7 year old child with ADHD

My son finds school easy and is looking to me to get more educational "input". I am exhausted doing botany projects and many things with him. After school, I constantly put him into extracurricular activities like Mad Science, SNAP engineering, art, and sports.

I live in San Jose, California. Does anyone have any experience with having a gifted and academically gifted child with ADHD who took a test to get into academically challenging classes?

If so, what test works with ADHD?

Center for Talented Youth/SCAT Test

The CTY/SCAT test is the least expensive, non-school option for getting your child tested. It can be done by going through the process provided by John Hopkins Center for Talented Youth. Once you have received your qualification notice through JHCTY, you can forward that to Lyceum with your application.

Other Tests

Lyceum also accepts over 100 other tests used to measure intellectual ability. Any intelligence or achievement test that appears on the Johns Hopkins CTY Acceptable Tests and Subtests list can be used. We will accept your child’s highest score on any of these tests even if that score was achieved prior to this year. Lyceum’s criteria is 98th percentile or higher on an overall score or main sub-test. Examples of these tests: are OLSAT, RAVENS, etc. If you have a question about whether a certain test can be used to qualify for Lyceum, please email [e-mail].

IQ Tests

To qualify, your child must score in the 95th percentile or above on overall IQ or any major sub-category. The most common test given is the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Fifth Edition (WISC-V).

Great questions.

Just curious, has the school district he attends now tested him? Also, do you have a 504 plan for him?

The school district I work in has a "rapid learner" program that you test into. Which is an elementary school program. Which is a much faster paced and more demanding program. Many of these kids go onto an International Bacaloreate program ( which is a high school diploma and an IB degree).

Many of the tests you describe his school should be able to give him.

I guess I would say the test is not fit to the kids, the kid is fit to the test. So our kids may need to take a few more breaks oor be able to sit in an Alternative seat. Or have a fidget with them. Or chunk the test up. Whatever the accommodations he uses in school would apply to the test.

Hope this makes sense? These accommodations can "help" them achieve their best score. I would say, just like the kids who needs glasses to read, without them things look blurry.

I am sure parents who have been through this type of testing will chime in.
