What meds are your children on

My daughter just turned 9 she has ADHD / ODD and some sensory issues. We struggled since she was a baby in a car seat screamed the whole time until we took her out. She is very picky about her clothes they have to be loose and soft. The morning before school is challenging and she is not doing great in school she seems to be all over the place. She is in summer school now as she didn't pass her reading test. What I am looking for is some advice on what kind of meds your child is on and how are they doing on it? What made you choose the medication?

Just curious, does your daughter have a 504 plan with her school and is she getting services that help with these issues. I assume an Occupational Therapist might help a lot. As far as medication, I recommend seeing a child psychiatrist who can work with you guys on helping with best medication with minimal side effects.

When medication is the right type, dose and timing it can help a lot, without changing their personality.

Our son takes Ritalin and Guaifenesin (Initiv). One is a stimulant and one is not. Ritilin helps to decrease the impulsivity and self control. Initiv helps with mood regulation and help to focus on any task. We started medication as soon as we got the diagnosis, we have had great success for our son now that we are getting help from the child psychiatrist. Before we were using one medication and did not see as much success. We were told medication can assist with 60% of behaviors. We have thearpy and education plan to help with the other behavior.

Our daughter was diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia when she was 6. We didn’t want to put her on meds at first, but after trying many other thing and talking to other parents, we scheduled an appointment with a pediatric neurologist who specializes in ADHD. He put her on a low dose of focalin extended release. It made a world of difference in her ability to focus and with emotional regulation. She now takes an additional booster around 2:30 to help her through the evening until bedtime. I know a lot of people have to try different meds and dosages until they find what works. We were lucky in that the first medication and dosage we tried had the desired results for her.

Best of luck to you!

We see a child psychiatrist for medications. There have been so many changes over the years. Neither my daughter nor my two grandsons were able to stay on just one medication although my oldest grandson was on Focalin XR with gradual increases for 5 years until it suddenly stopped working. Both grandsons are on Guanfacine with other meds. It alone did not work but it works beautifully with other meds.

My daughter and then her boys all started on medication between kindergarten and second grade. Good luck with your search.

My son is now 10 and was diagnosed with ADHD/ODD/Mild OCD, he has been taking Vyvanse (20 mg) for 2 years and it took a while before I really noticed a difference in his school work, he is now doing great in school because he can stay focused better. Also, just to let you know, my son's pediatrician had us send him to a Childrens' Neurologist and she is the one who diagnosed my son and now he gets his medication through his Pediatrician. If the doctor does put your child on medication I want to make you aware of a saliva swab that you can request from doctor before making a decision on what medicine to try and they swab the inside of the mouth and send it to lab which can determine which drug will be the most responsive and then you don't have to go through all these trials of medications. Just a tip. We are all in this together : ) You can do this!
