Hello! My son is newly diagnosed with ADHD as of last Wednesday. We have a myriad of information and resources that were given by the physician and even on the CHADD website. Where did you find is the best place to start? What helped you the most in the early learning stages. I'm listening to a book by Russell Barkley called "Taking Charge of ADHD: The complete, authoritative guide for parents."

where to start?
Welcome, we are glad you found the group. The beginning is very overwhelming and it really take a while to accept and move forward. I have found that my resources have changed over the years, but I really try to stay away from a lot of it. I know in my gut when things are right and try to go with that. I know that sounds weird but you will "know when things are working... when they work". If they are not you can search for help.
I have learned the most from this group and searching older posts about and issue I have, I enjoy reading how every has delt with it.
I am also a Podcast fan.. so I download only what helps me and leave the rest. I like " Parenting ADHD" becuase her son is close to our son's age.
One of the things that has helped me is to love our son no matter how bad it gets. I know that might sound weird. But I firmly believe that behavior especially "bad" behavior is a way of him communicating becuase he doesn't have a way of verbal explaining what is going on with him. I believe he will be ok and I love him just the way he is ( I don't like his behavior)
Last bit of advice, many children with ADHD really need ( like ours) to balance school life with something they love. For our son it is sports. So we pack his week with the sports he likes: individual and team. I know this has really helped him build confidence and learn to believe he can do it... this we believe rubs off on school.
We are always here when you need us.
Best of luck as you join us on this journey!.
Well, you certainly started off right by joining CHADD. You might have a neighborhood group near you. Join them and go to their meetings. You’ll meet parent there and other professionals from whom you’ll learn a lot. I find learning easiest from watching videos and joining CHADD webinars. Go to ADHD Dude for great short videos and advice. He also just started a parent education program. Also, I think this lecture by a nationally known doctor and research covers all the basics.
