Good evening!

My 14 year old daughter (9th grade) was just diagnosed with Inattentive ADHD and she has an appointment in a couple of weeks to discuss medication options.

Any suggestions based on experience?

Thank you!

Concerta is very helpful for me. Everyone is unique and some medications work better for others. If you don’t mind me asking, what led to your daughters diagnosis?

What led to her diagnosis is that even with private tutoring 2 to 3 times a week for many years, she has always struggled in school, especially with math. She received failing grades for her first semester of high school, and has been very depressed because of her grades and her feeling that she can't seem to expand her "friend circle". She has been seeing a therapist for almost 9 years, and at my request, they did an assessment which showed clear indication of Inattentive ADHD.

Treatment with a stimulant may help in all those areas. Concerta has very good reviews for children and adults l. I wish you and your daughter the best of luck in your journey. ❤️

Concerta has been a blessing to us as well (im an adult with adhd and I have a 13 year old son with adhd). I do notice that sometimes it feels like the meds aren’t working like they usually do and those are some very trying days of struggle to both of us. I am also raising an autistic 4 year old daughter who has adhd too but is not medicated yet. I am doing this alone- all 3 of us having adhd is a massive struggle to be in but I am trying my best with what I can do. I can’t afford to pay for the supplements that many give because they are very expensive once you add up the amount and times it by 3 people.

We are only able to tolerate the name brand of Concerta and thankfully found a patient assistance program that pays for the monthly cost of it.

That’s all I can do for now and it hurts me to know that I can’t do more.

If you don’t mind me asking, what dose do you take? I started at 18mg and it was effective for a few weeks but then I started to notice that after 3-4 hrs it didn’t seem effective. They moved me up to the 27mg... then 36mg and now I’m at 54mg and it seems to be the perfect amount to last all day. My 7 year old daughter also takes Concerta 18mg and has had great success with treatment.

Has she gotten through school up to this point with no help?

Hi, my son is 13, taking Concerta since he is diagnosed with ADHD at 8 and works for him. Even with medicine in afternoon he still need my help everyday to organize his homework because he gets overwhelmed very easily when he has a lot to do and he is very defiant some days, so he takes 5 min break in between those. I am subscribed to additudemag.com they have free specialist speeches every week, I always learn something and help me to understand better his condition. Good luck for you and your daughter ❤️

I’m glad she has gotten a clear diagnosis and now you are looking to find the right med for her.

You could also consider testing her in math with a psychologist to see if she has a math learning disability. If she does, she can receive accommodations or modifications to help her feel more successful at school.

Best of luck!
