Try your best to get him interested in what he is learning. Give tons of praise for his accomplishments in school and little to no criticism when he messes up. Rather try to talk to him and ask him if he wants to do well in school when he makes a mistake and or doesnt want to do his work. If he can become interested in doing well in school his ADHD will become an advantage for him. I would see if the school can find a way to make time for him to do homework while still at school.

Hi there. I wish there were ADHD meds that lasted this long but have yet to find one. My son has a high metabolism so he takes several small doses of Focalin throughout the day including a late afternoon dose for homework and sports. Most kids need this to help them after their school meds wear off. I would recommend you discuss with your son’s dr. It will make a world of difference doing homework.

Mydayis is the first 12-16 hour duration stimulant medication that came into the market at the end of 2017. I have many patients using it and it has been working well!

Thanks I’ll do some research on this and will discuss with his dr. Do you have success with patients that have a very high metabolism? My son chews through XR meds within 4 hours and they typically make him likes zombie. Little to no personality and that’s in the same dose of short acting he would normally take. We’ve tried 7/8 different meds on the market and Focalin was the only one that kept him focused, controlled his impulses, and kept his personality.

Yes! There is a new medication that came out a little over one year ago called MYDAYIS. It is the first 12-16 hour duration stimulant medication with the same formulation as Adderall XR (basically a longer acting Adderall XR). I have many patients that I prescribe this to and it works well!

Some people use a small dose of medication in the afternoon. But then I wonder if that's going to mess up bedtime.

Another alternative is Vyvanse (if not yet tried). For some, it lasts longer than Adderall XR. If you try Vyvanse or Mydayis and have private insurance, ask for the discount coupon from the doctor (or go to the drug webpage). It can limit your monthly copay.

My son switched to Vyvanse in high school and finds that it does last longer. However, I've had several psychiatrists tell me that these extended-release meds rarely last more than about 6 hours. My son also metabolized his very quickly and we started using 5-10mg of plain methylphenidate around 5pm for evening homework. It can cause some sleep disruption, but it does wear off after 4 hours. If we had to do it again, I would ask for no homework or have him do it with a tutor at school. The "homework wars" were brutal!!

We do Vyvanse in the morning, and then he takes 5 mg of Adderall (not XR) at about 2 or 2:30 to get through homework time.

YES!!! my 12 yr old son has been taking the Mydayis for awhile now. he has taken or tried just about everything out there. we don't/won't love with bad side affects. this one seems pretty great so far! he does not do well with XR meds but this one does good for him. we used to have to take stimulants every 3.5-4 hrs. what a pain! but if it did the trick, we were going to do it!! but now that he's in middle school, this has been great. def talk to your dr about this one!

My sons use vyvanse with an afternoon boost of adderol when they get home from school. One son doesn't have a problem falling asleep and the other does. The son who has a problem falling asleep is prescribed some medication to help him and also takes melatonin. Many children with ADHD also have problems with falling asleep and melatoin helps.
