My 6 year old has combined ADHD and was given 18mg concerta. He was on it for a couple weeks and he turned into an emotional tornado. Extreme Crying/angry meltdowns. He is generally a very happy kid. The psychiatrist took him off the concerta and put him on Guanfacine xr. The side effects that I am reading make me nervous. I don’t want to make him a zombie. Does anyone have experience with this drug,? Thanks!

My daughter was on it until a few weeks ago. Only switched off because her treatment plan is focusing on attention issues and not impulsivity. She was on it for four years and had no issues.
My son started this medication last year when he was 6. On paper it sounded like the perfect thing for him but it didn’t work out. He was actually moodier and cried for no reason. His teacher reported worse behavior at school. And he was exhausted most of the day. I suspect his blood pressure was low. His psychologist noticed that his attention improved quite a bit but felt that his personality was flat. He got up to 2g which was the weight based dose. Our psychiatrist said that it either works well or they react the way my son does. So we stopped and switched to a stimulant. It was like night and day when he came off of it. I felt like we had our silly, active boy back.
That was just our experience. I’ve heard that it is often very effective and doesn’t cause the side effects that we saw in everyone.
My 6 year old had the same experience except he lost his appetite completely he is now on vyavance doing a lot better and eating
