Does any of your kids also has dyslexia? If yes, what kind of IEP accommodations do they have for dyslexia?

I do not have a child with Dyslexia, but have lots of experience with this issue. Imagine you go to read any printed material ( more than 1 page) and you read it but you can recall what you read or understand what you read. You are saying the words and they come out of your mouth fine, but when asked what you read you are unable to describe it. Unless you look at the material and read it at the same time.

Some accommodations that are really important are access to an online reading sources ( there are many, but Bookshare.org has the largest selection of books)

Extra time on written work, including homework and in class writing. Any test ( should be allowed to be read to the child)

Sometimes spelling can really be a challange so you might ask for a electronic spelling source.

Access to computer for written assignment so they are not done by hand.

If the child needs a quiet space for all testing.

I would also recommend putting something in about if the child can not find electronic versions of a book, modifying to assignment. Or have the book read for them.

Hope this helps, children with dyslexia are very smart it's just learning to learn again.

Take care,

My daughter has dyslexia, dysgraphia, ADHD, and anxiety.

You can go to websites such as understood.org and find lists of potential accommodations for IEP and 504 plans for any learning disability. You can also simply Google "504 accommodations for dyslexia", etc. If you find multiple lists, merge them together first. Then go through the list thinking about which items would best help your child. Then read the list out loud to your child and ask them which items they think would help them in school (yes, you can do this with a very young child as well). Take the items you starred from both lists and have them added to your child's 504 or IEP. During the 504/IEP meeting, you will also ask the teacher if they have any specific suggestions for accommodations. I also sent the lists of possible accommodations that I found on the web to the teacher prior to the meeting so that they could have time to think about the range of options.

Take care!
