I know Our school starts in a week ,and I have been stressed for about 2 weeks already. I love education, but I hate school.
Today I tried to get my son to at least start the summer project he had assigned. Just make simple movie poster. Simple.
We had a major fight, I failed again...
I don’t even want to think of school. I Feel your pain .
Does your child have a 504 or IEP? If not, get one quickly and have them put in either decreased or no homework. This issue caused years of battles for us and caused all of us to hate school. Looking back, I can honestly say that most of the homework was simply busy work anyway, with very little value. One final question: you are checking notebooks, backpack, etc. before morning to make sure everything is in there, right?
And back your child - not the school. I wish we had done this years ago.
My daughter has a 504 plan. Elementary school teachers were more receptive to her needs, but now in middle school, it is more of a challenge. They expect her to be more independent with her work. I would suggest you schedule a meeting with the principal, school counselor, and the teachers to come up with concrete plans for the year (ex. sit in front of the class and away from windows, reduced number of pages of homework, the teacher should collect the homework assignment personally from the child, rather than asking it to be put in some bin, which will definitely be forgotten, helping to organize desk by instructing child to clear it daily at end of day, or week, etc.). Try and put all homework in one folder and have book bag ready near the door the night before.
It is a lot of work, and we struggle with it all year long, but ADHD children need a lot of structure. Organization is our biggest difficulty.
We can totally relate at our house. My anxiety was through the roof a couple of weeks before school started. I decided to be proactive before school started, mainly to ease my own anxiety. I met with the school counselor, my son’s teacher and the nurse (to go over med schedule). It helped ease my mind tremendously! We haven’t put a 504 in place yet because everyone feels we are on the same page and will have a good handle on things. It was recommended to us that we have a 504 in place come 4th grade so then it will follow him to intermediate school so he will have accommodations in place.
I literally cringe every time the school calls my work or I have a message on my phone. Keep your head up. I would talk with the school counselor and tell them this isn’t working and everyone needs to come up with a better plan.
I am the same way as soon as I see the school in my caller ID I almost die.. they called the other day and I had a feeling my son was in trouble becuase everything has been so good. Of course the school nurse and the OTC meds were expired... ( one more thing to deal with, funny thing is the summer program had them and I never even looked at the box)!!! It never ends, so I had to go buy special boxes just for the school. I buy large Costco bottles and pour them into smaller bottles becuase we travel all the time.
When I told my son his heart stopped, it we both laughed about it..
I certainly understand what you are going through. The change from elementary to middle school for us, and we have an IEP, was tremendous. As scrabble said they expect them to be more independent and my experience was they expected everyone to fit into the same box by this certain time frame. We even had teachers that expected him to do things how she wanted it regardless of the fact that he had an IEP. I will say homework woes were better for us because there seemed to be less in middle school than in elementary! We also go once a week to a tutor and she reinforces homework with him. We will help quiz him for tests, etc and finish up what isn’t done at tutor ( mostly math is done there) and this helps tremendously because they can cover much more ground than we can at home together. She gets less resistance so they are able to get done faster.
Unfortunately I encountered a lot of resistance from a few teachers when following his iep and we were going in a couple times a month for meetings and multiple emails a week were going back and forth. In my case it was appalling the lack of concern that was shown when the iep wasn’t followed and we even had a teacher claim she didn’t even know my son was on an iep until our meeting in October!! I don’t believe that as we had already had numerous emails as well as emails with his team at school referencing his IEP. But all of this created an enormous amount of stress on my son and our entire family as a whole. I stood up for my son and went against the school because I had seen enough and heard enough with my own conversations with the teacher to know she wasn’t being 100% truthful. We chose to transfer school midway through the year last year (I’m sure they all cheered) because the toll it was taking wasn’t worth it to us. Now, my son is so much happier and I haven’t had one single problem or issue since moving and the teachers have been wonderful!! I am still amazed at how this has transformed my sons attitude toward school and how much happier it has made my family to have this burden lifted! I hope that with communication with teachers and admin., reinforcement at home, and a clearly defined 504 or Iep plan that addresses your child’s areas of weakness will be all you need to get you headed in the right direction!! Best of Luck!
I got a phone call recording from the principal every day saying I missed one or more classes that day. Pick and choose your battles.
