Can you tell me more about you situation? What are your options? When was the diagnosis? Have you tried medication? Etc. I’m not an expert but I can share my experiences. My son has ADHD. I was very reluctant to give him medication but agreed to trial it. The first trial of Ritalin was terrible as he became out of control when it wore off. We then trialled dexampetamine and it has been great. My itially fears about medication have gone with a lot of research as well as seeing the positive effects. Seems as if a few of your option may be a good idea.
First off welcome to this amazing community... Many of us have crossed that road at some point. I am a parent of a child with ADHD who takes medication and goes to a therapist and has interventions at school and I am also a teacher and I see both families that choose to give their children medication and children that don't.
My opinion for my family and my son is if he had any medical condition that needed medication, I would it to him. His body and brain can not function without it.
So for us it is what is best..
Each person has to make the choice for themself.
But I can give you a big hug and support you in your choice and journey. Welcome!
I have to agree with Kelly and on the move, my daughter is SO much better off on medication...she’s actually able to focus and learn. She’s not impulsive so she’s not getting in trouble ALL the time the way she has her whole life until she started on Ritalin 3 months ago. She’s only 5 years old but has been diagnosed with ADHD since 3 (which is VERY rare that young but her symptoms were so obvious). We didn’t attempt any medication until she turned 5. WHAT. A. DIFFERENCE! She also tends to come unraveled when she’s coming down from her 10mg dose of Ritalin but we have been able to catch it with a 5mg “booster” dose that helps her finish out her day focused and more fun to be around. I don’t know about you guys but there were and are definitely times that I felt guilty as a parent because (this is before realizing that medication could be so helpful) some days I did not want to be around my daughter...she was so exhausting. I’m a stay at home mom and I ended up picking up work one day a week just to have a short break from the constant motion, redundant behavior corrections (I.e. time outs), and attention required to care for my sweet baby girl! ☺️
