I have a 17 year old son with ADHD he is really struggling in school just not completing homework and falling behind. Any suggestions on how I can approach his teachers. I know helicopter Mom. Thanks

I recommend you first take some time to gather information from your son so you can figure out exactly what the issues are. One of the best ways to do this is to discuss with him which classes he likes and does well in and see if you can both figure out what is different in those classes vs the ones he is struggling with. Also, its good to get input from him re: what kinds of help he thinks he needs (and is willing to accept.) Next, you can ask his school counselor to set up a meeting with all his teachers (it's important your son attend too) so you can all be on the same page, find out what's working and what isn't and approach these issues as a proactive, collaborative team. Even if you do all this, that doesn't make you a "helicopter" as long as you make sure to include your son in the whole process so he has input, buy-in and ownership of the problems as well as the solutions. Remember that to prepare him for adulthood, it's important to empower him to take responsibility for himself because one day you won't be there to do it for him.

You might find my collaborative, strategic approach to problem solving helpful. I have a free email course that explains the steps. parentcoachjoyce.com/how-to...

Hope this helps!

I recomend you accommodations at school that your psychologist bring to the table . This one helps them a lot in order to have extra time for proyecta and test . An academically coach also helps a lot and medicine in case he is not taking in it . Good luck
