I have Inattentive ADHD and went through puberty at age 12 and did absolutely horrible grade-wise in middle school. I went undiagnosed until my mid 20s. I am a studying psychologist currently in grad school to become an MFT psych. Anyway, the symptoms you mention are of common occurrence. If there is anything I would have changed about my past, it would have been 2 things. 1. I would've gotten myself diagnosed much younger, and 2. I would have started taking ADHD medication to help me through the hell that was middle school and high school for me.

As someone who has worked with parents/family members that have ADHD, the cycles, symptoms, problems, and struggles are almost always the same. The reason why people put negative emphasis and bad side effects of ADHD medication is because they are not doing anything to combat those negative side effects. This is where supplements come into play.

1. Take for instance the chance of an increase in heart rate/blood pressure. This is eliminated through taking the supplement CoQ10, which works to protect the heart and keep things stable.

2. What about large amounts of oxidation from ADHD meds? This the most common and greatest concern of most people I speak with. The supplement Alpha-Lipoic Acid is one of the greatest and most powerful antioxidant supplements out there that works great with the medication. I take it 2x a day everyday and it works amazingly

3. What about irritability and having trouble getting to sleep? The supplement L-Tryptophan is great for uplifting the mood during the day and helping get a great night sleep, and combined with Melatonin 300mcg, you will be getting some of the best deep sleep and wake up feeling refreshed.

4. What about those people that say the medication just stops working for them? For this I say to take N-Acetyl Tyrosine. Tyrosine works with Dopamine and Norepinephrine which is what most ADHD medications work with, and that supplement helps when those neurotransmitters are depleted. L-Tryptophan (as mentioned in #3.) helps with the depletion of Serotonin, which is also affected by taking ADHD meds.

5. I have heard of people having pain in there gums/ears etc. A lot of the time this has to do with the fact that some people do not take a good multivitamin with their ADHD medication, which is horrible. A good multivitamin with ADHD medication go hand in hand.

(THESE SUPPLEMENTS, ALONG WITH WHAT I TAKE ARE ON A LINK ON MY PAGE, AS WELL A LINK TO A ADHD SUPPLEMENT WEBSITE)

Most importantly, if you decide on ADHD medication, the dosage does not have to be really high like some people I have seen. I take a small 10mg dosage of Adderall 2x a day with supplements. I have been doing this for 3yrs and have found great success because of having my condition under control. ADHD medication is not a crutch but rather a much needed tool for people with ADHD to be able to succeed in life. Medication is not a magic pill though, one still has to put in the effort.

And if all my blabbing was not convincing, watch this video by one of the head researchers of ADHD.......Dr. Russell Bradley This is How you treat ADHD, its on youtube, hope this helps

My 12 year old was also lying about things all the time, sometimes very inconsequential stuff. It used to really upset us. His therapist recommended we don’t make a huge deal about it, and simply talk through the lies calmly, and without punishment. It has really helped to reduce the instances.

Please get your son on ADHD medication. This is the first line for treatment of this neurological disorder. Your son is now a teen and I will tell you from experience that things are not going to get better if your son does not have some degree of control over his behavior. This includes school, sports, social life, etc. Lying is very common with ADHD kids and it's hard to know how to deal with it. I recommend not punishing too severely and not making a big deal about it unless it's serious.

Do some research on the ADHD meds. Find a physician to prescribe and get started. It can sometimes take awhile to find the best medication and the correct dose. My son is now 23 and has been on an ADHD drug off and on since age 9 and he is just fine. The side effects are not serious and are definitely manageable. Your son will not get through high school or college without medication.

We also had a problem with our son lying over seemingly pointless things. This article was really helpful to us (that it's a coping mechanism, and how to handle it.)
