Hi, I am a mom of a 15 y/o son. He also has depression. Last week, he started taking the generic form of Welbutrin; would your son be open to medication? Would he agree to see a therapist?

my son (almost 15) has ADHD and generalized anxiety. about 2 years ago he was mildly depressed. He takes Daytrana for adhd and then he has taken Abilify for the anxiety (inositol is a natural anxiety reducer and we have tried it at night to help quiet his thoughts, but we don't use it anymore). Two years ago the psychiatrist added lexapro as a booster to help the abilfy. It has worked great. His anxiety has lessoned greatly and he doesn't seemed depressed. I am going to talk to the dr about taking him off the lexapro and see how he does. He started high school so he has had a lot of adjustments this year, but doing well overall. His grades were in the toilet (not all) because he would forget to turn things in or even do them. As long as he has a C and he turns the work in I'm okay with it. He has 2 honors classes and he could do better, but he is also managing several other things.

We do go to therapy weekly with some breaks in between. he complains about going but once he is there, he is fine. The key is finding someone who they can relate to which is not always easy and often have to pay out of pocket, then send to your insurance to get reimbursed.

Is your oldest still in high school? Is he nervous about finishing high school? I highly suggest starting with a counselor at school if he doesn't already see one. Just getting them to talk can be so helpful and talking to Mom doesn't always help (mine barely talks to me and I feel like I nag all the time, so I try to keep it light and simple if I can).

Good luck to you!!
