UK based AN People & Insurance Claims!

My Question is based around anyone in the UK who have successfully claimed on their Critical Illness insurance policy. I have been told by my insurers that an AN is a borderline case. My policy booklet says a Benign Brain Tumour with permanent symptoms. I know each case is assessed individually but surely hearing loss and balance issues are permanent?? I would like to hear other peoples stories please. Sending much love to our community 🥰

Hi, I am waiting to hear back from my insurers regarding this. My booklet is slightly different as it says ' Benign Brain Tumour requiring surgery'. I do have surgery booked; the surgeon said I could watch and wait for a while but it would probably start to cause balance issues in the next 12-18 months. The said the only way to confirm if it would be paid is by submitting a claim. At the moment they are waiting for a report back from my GP. I will update when I hear more.

Hi, sorry for the delayed update. I have just found out today that AVIVA are going to pay my claim - so not quick but a positive result. 😀 I also had my surgery last month and am recovering well so all us good.

Hope you also have yours paid.

My insurers 10 or so years ago paid for the first couple of scans and consultations, then as it became a watch and wait, said that it was no longer covered. They said that had it needed surgery there and then, that would have been covered. This was around 2010, I was watch and wait until 2014. Had gamma knife on NHS.

Thank you for your reply. Did your critical illness insurance pay out after your surgery??

I didn’t pursue it as I’d had to move to the NHS for my watch and wait scans. The NHS were brilliant and as soon as I needed surgery, they organised everything. I don’t think a benign tumour would be considered critical illness - but I couldn’t be sure. I’ve since moved insurance (through husband’s work) and it’s now considered a pre-existing condition and wouldn’t be covered!! 🤔😀

Hi, I didn’t have that cover don’t have direct experience, but remember seeing on another forum via Facebook (and BANA support group) many people who have successfully claimed. As I remember thinking I wish I’d had that!!

Hi when I was diagnosed I checked my policy and it specifically listed AN. I applied with no expectations and received full payout without question. I suspect the devil is in the detail of the policy. Good luck to anyone going through this. Stay strong xxx

Who is your insurer - they all try silly buggers saying it's "chronic" but if treatment is indicated - after waait & waatch - it is acute - and you can take them to the ombudsman if they try to bow out...kind of thing.

Hey. Thanks for taking the time to reply. It’s still early days on my claim so I’m hopeful it’ll go through. I know insurance companies will try to wriggle out of paying. I’ve worked in insurance so am fully prepared to fight if things don’t work out!! All the very best

One thing I found: all the cons. know each other, and all have a certain disdain for the ins. cos - in varying degrees. I asked my cons. for help with the wording of their lettres etc and it was quite helpful.

Since you worked in it you'll be aware the ins co's are constantly trying to get obligations from the cons's - to take this group or be on that plan scheme...they have bit o power with them actually
