AN - Getting Life Insurance

Hello everyone, I hope you are all doing as best as you can.

I am currently with Aviva for Life Insurance Cover. Anyway, they seem to be taking full advantage of the fact that I have a AN in my right ear. Last year, they raised my monthly life insurance to £95 PER MONTH.

Can anyone recommend any other insurance companies that would cover people like us so I can dump these robbing ********.

Thank you.

Hi there,

I’m a little confused. Life premiums are set at outset and do not change when your medical situation changes, because they are underwritten at the point of going ‘on risk’.

Is it possible that your situation changed before the policy went into effect?

In terms of life assurance now, I can offer my detailed experience. Later I cover travel insurance.

A new policy will not be entertained by a life provider until 2 years and 1 month after radio surgery (gamma knife) or 3 years and 1 month after radiotherapy.

In terms of travel insurance, which is not life assurance, I discovered it was best to go to my bank and upgrade the cover I paid for, as it was cheaper than starting afresh. My premium was increased in year one by about £300 which included the fact I would be outside the UK for over 10 weeks in one stretch. Once you have had surgery, one year on, you do not usually need to disclose the condition and normal weighting applies meaning you are unlikely to be charged extra, after 1 year.

Please ensure that the insurance teams knows your condition. Although being a Vestibular Schwannoma most insurance companies still use the term Acoustic Neuroma or benign brain tumour.

I hope this helps.

Thank you for your excellent reply there GGourmet.

Unfortunately, I closed my previous Life Insurance with Liverpool Victoria a couple of years ago. I had this insurance at the time of the AN / VS was discovered.

I never bothered to claim anything, as at that time there was no issues. There still isn't fortunately, although I may be referred, or will probably be referred at the end of this year.

I tried to reinstate the policy, but because I had left it for 3 months they refused and stated that a new policy would be required.

So, because I have a mortgage, it makes sense to also have life insurance.

There were various companies that refused to insure me (I have declared the AN / VS), and there were some that would.

I made them aware of the AN / VS and Aviva stated that it was approximately £83 PCM. This is January 2022.

I need to investigate more.

Thanks again.

Daz.

Hi there. Okay. It appears you are fortunate to find that Aviva will cover you. But, it might come with strings and it’s worth double checking that you would really be covered.

I was in a similar situation, in as much as just 6 months before I realised I had a problem, I was about to press the button on LIFE WITH CIC. The symptoms started and that was that. I regret that every day.

Please note that your Liverpool Victoria policy, if life only and did not include Critical Illness (CIC) would have been unlikely to have paid out under the terminal illness claim section. This is because the terminal illness clause is for conditions where there is a written statement that death is likely within 12 months - that is extremely unlikely for an AN.

Equally, this condition might not be caught by a CIC policy. Conditions covered are in the terms.

I hope this helps.

Fantastic reply again.

Thank you for this. I really appreciate it.

I did make them aware of the AN, so hopefully it will be covered following any treatment, if required.
