Don't know what to do.

Hello everyone,

This is my first time posting on here. I have had a few problems with being depressed and stress in the past and I have usually used self-help techniques but recently over the past 2 weeks I have felt a slight emptiness within me. I haven't had the energy to go out. I haven't been able to eat and drink properly without feeling sick. I also haven't been able to sleep properly. When I have it usually a result of me having to cry myself to sleep. I am just a month into university. I have assignments due but I haven't been able to concentrate. I have only just recovered week into university from the illness I had before in January and now I have to deal with this. I don't know what to do. I have arranged a GP appointment to get some help. However, I am unsure about what to do with regards to my university. I really sorry for being such a hassle but I can't speak to anyone about what to do.

You are not being a hassle, it seems you are going through a hard time. Maybe the doctor will shed some light on what the problem is. I hope you will feel better soon. Would going and doing something different every so often help you to think and feel differently? Something to take you away from it all once or twice a week.

Hi. Thanks for replying. I do think that maybe trying to do something once or twice a week might help. It's just the issue of getting out there and doing it.

Your university will have student support in place so look at accessing this asap so you can start to get a handle on your work. It only takes an illness to leave us playing catch up. You're having a very reasonable response to the stress. Talk to your lecturers and let them know your situation. I'm confident they will help take some of the pressure off. Be honest with you GP if you feel there's more here than stress related to you uni work. Are you really happy on your course? Do you have support? Have a wee think. You have a great future ahead and is yours for the taking 😊

Hi. Thanks for replying. I do actually love my course. I have had stress related problems in the past which means that this is nothing new. However, the feelings of everything around me being negative and the self-harm thoughts are something that I have never had to deal in the past. I have just been to my GP and referred to some counselling and I have just got in contact with the social support services at university. Thank you.
