I had a cartilage removed from my knee many years ago - ALL of it. How can I exercise more without doing more damage to my knee?

It is not severe enough for replacement yet.

Hi hilmunday,

I think you should probably be asking your GP or practice nurse about that - in terms of the specific issues you have. You may find low impact exercise beneficial, like water-based activities, but whether that is a good idea for your situation depends on a number of things.

However, do remember legs aren't the only part of the body that can be exercised. I discovered that quite a number of ex servicemen who have lost lower limbs keep themselves fit by using devices like the old Bullworker (there are a number of similar things / devices) to keep their upper body exercised. Similarly, you can use weights in such a way too, and various other things also.

I mean I can't see why exercising your biceps or triceps necessarily is going to be a problem for your knee.

Having arthritis in my knees as well as being overweight++ I read somewhere that doing the following is helpful, viz 10 sec vigorous exercise then 10sec resting, 10 sec vigorous ex, 10 sec rest. This is carried out for 2min so not too onerous. What I do is sit down and march so that my bohind takes the pressure of my weight but my legs are moving and hopefully building muscle. I also swing my arms around to music, stretching etc. So far so good, but medical advice should be sought as we are all different.
