It’s about more than the quantity of calories

I like Dr Sten Ekberg’s You Tube channel. He explains things well. I don’t know if anyone follows Jillian Michaels’ (America’s Biggest Loser trainer) works outs - I used to a long while ago. She made a video saying intermittent fasting is not good for weight loss and the quality of calories doesn’t matter - it’s the quantity. These ideas are challenged by Dr Ekberg and he gives a quick insight to how intermittent fasting works and why. He debunks her ideas in a calm, knowledgable and respectful way.

Two reactions.

Intermittent Fasting (IF).

I've found this very useful and certainly it has contributed to weight-loss for me. Specifically I've used TRE (Time Restricted Eating) of 14:10 (14 hour windows of not eating, 10 hours eating, i.e. I eat food from 10.00am (breakfast) to 8.00pm (dinner) before an eating gap until the following breakfast. A big benefit is that I'm not having nighttime snacks because I've committed to myself not to.

Quality not quantity of calories matter.

I'm absolutely in the school of finding that what you eat matters more than how much. My 8 stone loss has come about from a focus on Low Carb (c.50g/day), low sugar (<5g/100g content) a pile of veggies and sufficient healthy fat foods (avoiding low-fat, low-calorie processed slurry) to significantly reduce hunger.

Intermittent fasting certainly worked for me, both in terms of weight loss and also in terms of maintenance. In particular I love it's "portability", I could get on a flight for a week long business trip anywhere in the world, and know that I had all the tools necessary to control my weight. I didn't have to worry about hotel scales or restaurant menus. All I had to do was smile and not eat for a few hours, something I'd proven over and over again to myself just wasn't that big a hardship.

But hey, just because something worked for me doesn't mean it'll work for you. We all have different genes, different personalities, and live very different lives.

Absolutely. I was just amused by JM saying it was about cals in vs cals out, well that and the bear/human comparison, especially with the after results of the TV programme she contributed to.

Thanks for this, AnnieW55, I've linked this to the DIET MYTH: A calorie is a calorie. Hope that's OK :)

This is a brilliant video. Thanks for posting the link as it explains so much of the science behind weight loss which is in opposition to what we have been told since the 80’s.

You’re right. Many of us were bought up in the tried and trusted old way, only to change to the shiny new way which has landed us where we are. The trouble now is that the last 50yrs or so have seen an explosion in addictive unreal foods and virtually continuous eating. Drs Ekberg, Unwin, Fung and many others (look on You Tube for these people and Fat & Furious) are trying to change things but it’s an uphill struggle against powerful food and Big Pharma industries.

Yes. The big companies have a lot to answer for and of course they are hand in hand with the government. So it’s no wonder the population is being fed misinformation.
