First World problems during times of troubles

Subtle_badger profile image

I'm approaching my goal weight. My intermediate jeans purchased around the new year are going to need a belt for decency when I lose another 1/2 cm off my hips. I really need a new pair.

But I don't know what size I am!! I have an eccentric figure. Very narrow waist (that's thickened a little post menopause) compared to my hips, and legs like tree trunks. I can take my measurements, but that is just the beginning. Jeans have always been a challenge; a dozen pairs in the change room, and one grudgingly purchase as being OK.

The shops are shut, and I don't want order a dozen pairs blind - I don't want to touch them, I don't want workers have to handle my returns, and a dozen might get me an "it will do" but it won't get me a "these jeans make me feel like a goddess". And the rules on deliveries and returns may change and I could be stuck with a dozen jeans that don't fit me.

As I say, first world problems.

Any others?

Wear different trousers besides jeans. Leggings just for the duration???

I'm not really a leggings girl. If I wear my waist length faux fur jacket over a hoodie with a pair of leggings, won't I just look like I haven't put on my skirt?

in reply toSubtle_badger

It takes a brave person or a 6 year old to wear a waist length top with leggings. However, as no one is going out or seeing each other, it matters not that much. SuperDry sent me an email saying ‘Get Noticed!’. By whom, I wonder. I think if I need a new hoodie for my husband & son to notice me, I am in trouble....

Oh, I have plenty of clothing that is not fit for outside eyes. Even pants and tights, in a pinch. But I will need to restock toilet paper in an estimated 8 days (yes, I now know how long a roll lasts!) and I don't want to dress like a 3 year old for that.

PS well done with the shrinking! So impressed.

Thank you. Hit "normal" BMI on Friday, and scale has been taunting me for two days at 70.0. How is that even possible? I haven't weight the same for 2 days in a row for ever, I think.

in reply toSubtle_badger

I would say I was jealous, after my month of STS (now not weighing myself anymore) but I reckon you'll just tell me off...

Subtle_badger profile image
Subtle_badger in reply to

Yeah, I would. And you are forgetting I had six weeks of STS when I was well above 25BMI. I've earned this.

I wish I could believe that I am done, but there is a persistent bit of belly fat that is worrying to me, and I think I am still carrying visceral fat around my thicker waist.

I'd love to get some sort of BF analysis, but can't justify the cost nor the risk right now.

in reply toSubtle_badger

I am not really complaining... And yes you have definitely earned the weight loss. The scales may yet move again for me - not that they need to, but they may. I still have plenty of currently too small clothes to wear if they do...

Hi SB ,Sorry hun That's a new badge isn't it? I hadn't noticed. Brilliant loss👏. I completely understand how important those new jeans are.

As already said at the mo it doesn't look as though we're going anywhere. I suggest you keep a wish list then when the shops open again just go for a whole new outfit!😋

Stay safe.xx

Subtle_badger in reply toTheTabbyCat

Thank you very much. I am trying to keep to myself. A belt isn't a disaster, but I may revert to my older jeans, which now look like paper bag jeans, emphasising the weight loss.

in reply toSubtle_badger

Isn't a paper bag waistband hugely trendy? Or was that last year?

They are on The Gap site, which I visited yesterday, which is what made me think of it. But I think The Gap lags the curve a bit.

Subtle_badger profile image
Subtle_badger in reply to

Just googled it: Abercrombie and Finch, Allsaints at > £70. Yup, I'm on trend.

(the actual jeans are gabardine ones from M&S that were bought without pleasure because they were inexpensive and they fitted. Rejigging them as something high end and trendy might be fun)

It is always good to emphasise weight loss girl, you have got it to show off, so show it off!

Congrats on the loss and your progress !

try some high waisted jeggings ... I tend to buy high waist as I have a very dippy spine ( not sure how to explain it ? and ( even at my weight) my waist is small compared to my hips and boobs ( I'm very fortunate in that respect)

You can generally get them in more of a slim leg or a boot cut too if you don't want to go the whole hog and wear skinny jeans ... I love the George wonder fit jeans or simply be do some called shaper jeans that also fit really great on my waist but allow for my hips... neither are very expensive if you wanted to try them :)

Subtle_badger in reply toScarletM

Can't do jeggings, sorry, I have rolled my eyes at them too many times. 😂

George (Asda, right?) is a good suggestion if I need to cover my nakedness while the shops are still closed.

ScarletM profile image
ScarletM2 stone in reply toSubtle_badger

Yes ASDA-cheap and cheerful and they wash nice for everyday use.

lol @ rolling your eyes, I don’t mind them as long as they are more denim than that legging material

Subtle_badger profile image
Subtle_badger in reply toScarletM

Sure. It's not a criticism of you, just where I am in my life.

Maybe I haven't looked at enough jeggings, but I have seen a lot of young women in jeggings who look like they are wearing tights with no skirt. The appliquéd pockets don't fool me.

But of course, there maybe jeggings out there that look so close to jeans that I have thought they were.

Bottomlline: it's even more important to try on jeggings than normal jeans before I buy them. But I promise to keep an open mind.

BrynGlas profile image
BrynGlas in reply toScarletM

Me too ScarletM my first pair of jeggings were Asda denim ones, not skin tight, and helped me to get myself out there a bit after losing 3 stones.

Mind you, I found that I could not trust Asda sizing. I bought tons of these jeggings. I still have some that I use for gardening. But I bought about 3 pairs of size 14 in one go. Only 1 of them fit me, the others I had to take an inch off down each side on the outside seam! LoL I never had any which were too small though for some reason!

Braces will keep the trousers up until you can go to the shops and try on new clothes. Something to look forward to in these dark days:-)

Well done on getting the badge.

For the goddess jeans you might need to wait. It’s spring and the sun is shining and we’re anyway stuck at home, so maybe try ordering a dress instead? No waist involved 😉 and you can still wear your faux fur with it.

Subtle_badger profile image
Subtle_badger in reply toSewMore

Good suggestion. I am actually well placed with quite a few dresses from the old days. My taste is eccentric enough that they weren't fashionable, so they aren't out of date now.

But one of my mine types of exercise is long walks (while I still can). That needs stout shoes, and stout shoes + dress looks really dumpy with my tree trunk legs.

SewMore profile image
SewMoreRestart August 2024 in reply toSubtle_badger

Perhaps some Lycra sports leggings then, the yoga ones have bootleg so go with the shoes. Some have drawstring waist so you can pull in to fit you perfectly?

Subtle_badger profile image
Subtle_badger in reply toSewMore

Again, maybe. But I need to try them on first!

Or I can stick to cycling. I wear merino thermal underwear over my shorts and feel great. But that's exercise kit. I can only wear it if my cycle is nearby.

Oh you clever girl, well done you! Well, the only feasible thing that I can think of is.......... are you any good at sewing/got a machine?

I took tons of jeans and jeggings in when I was losing weight in 2012 ish. But for the moment a belt will have to do for you! I often buy men's jeans because I like the fit apart from on my waist, though with all the men wearing skinny fit jeans (ie, B awful ) I don't think I could go there these days. So I am used to adjusting waists on jeans. Just had home made veggie soup for brunch.

I hesitate to tell you this, because I am so surprised and convinced that it isn't true, or will change drastically tomorrow, but I was 13st2lb 8oz yesterday and 13st 1 lb 8 oz today. But I will not hold my breathe!

Haven't been to see my doggy because I am awaiting a heating oil delivery and my brother in law is coming to stay for the duration. We are both alone, neither can go out far and I decided that the safest place for him is here with no neighbours, (he has copd) no family in and out and I have plenty of stuff to keep him busy for 6 months minimum at least! He was also determined to go to a big auction sale in Leeds on Wednesday next, which I don't think will go ahead, but still, he was looking forward to going! He ain't going nowhere like that I can assure you!

I know, some of you will think I am crackers, but we are both alone and I am willing to take the chance. Anyway, I have been staying at his place in Stoke mostly since February last year and from Nov 9th 2019 to March 3rd this year solid, while I have been caring for my mother who lives in Stoke. So I thought long and hard and made my decision.

Jumping to the last thing: no, it's not crazy. You are doing what gay men did back in the AIDS crisis (and still now, I think). They called it fluid-bonding. There is a tiny risk one of you has it now, but if you don't then you are in it together. If one of you gets sick, the other is right there. And even if both of you do, you can care for each other. And with each other for company, you are less at risk of the diseases of loneliness.

Thank you Subtle_badger, you understand.

He can and no doubt will be a pain in the rear, but I have known him since 1968, and his wife was a great freind who died January 2nd 2019. I am Godmother to his girls too. I can find plenty here to keep him busy, he gets very bored, very quickly, so I told him to bring his chain saw, drill & other tools and not to forget a bag of cement!!! LoL He can maybe take me to see my dog too hopefully.

good problem to have in a way so well done :) could you get another pair of the ones you have in the next size down?

Subtle_badger profile image
Subtle_badger in reply tosunny369

Thanks. But I don't even know how many sizes it is.

Truly, a friend gifted me the intermediate jeans. The day we happened to exchange (weeks after we agreed to swap) they fitted me perfectly. I have no idea of the other jeans in the range.
