Convalescence?

Hello, everyone!

I have not posted for sometime as I’ve been in and out of hospital with pneumonia. But, one small compensation is that I have dropped from 16stone 3lb to 15stone 6lb since November 20th. My question is: NHS says I need to eat to build up my compromised immunity after my illness but I am still grossly overweight so at what point can I restrict my food again ie. when will my immune system have reinstated itself sufficiently to do this? (I have lupus too.) I should also mention that the pneumonia has left me very easily exhausted (eg. I have to sit down after getting washed and dressed.) Thank you.

Hello Lizzie and welcome back :)

I am sorry to see that you have been so poorly and hope that you are now on the mend. Pneumonia is a horrible thing and I am not at all surprised that you are feeling exhausted.

I agree that you need to look after yourself and eat to help your body heal. You can eat healthily without being at risk of regaining the weight you have lost. (Not the best way to loose it, was it!).

Make sure that you are eating really healthy foods such as vegetables and some good fats that will help to give you more energy. Don't eat any of the 'diet' and low cal foods, they are not satiating and are generally full of sugar and will just leach the energy out of you even more.

I am going to give you an article to read, you may feel it isn't appropriate, but I promise you, if you can adopt the low carb, high fat approach, your body will heal beautifully and your energy will increase over time.

I´d say take a fresh look at the BMI calculator, stick to the upper end of your recommended calorie interval for a week or two and see how you feel. Generally if you´ve been properly sick for a longer while you want to feel fit and healthy for at least a week before stressing your body again.
