Protein shakes - yay or nay?
Protein Shakes make me feel so much better😉
Yay
Wouldn't you rather eat proper food? A delicious home-cooked meal? I've never tried a protein shake, but I wouldn't, as it doesn't train you in healthy eating habits. Give me a proper breakfast, lunch or dinner any day!
I eat breakfast lunch and dinner and snack everyday too but also go gym and sometimes enjoy a protein shake xx
But, if you have a busy lifestyle preparing high protein meals that are healthy isn't always or even often possible. Protein shakes give you a really clean protein boost so you've got everything you need to gain muscle.
I believe as Trimmerteacher. However once in awhile on a hot day after cutting the grass l enjoy a Banana Protein Drink that l make at home.
I am not certain of the health benifits but it is yummy.
On busy days I sometimes have protein shake or bar as a meal replacement
Would I rather have a real meal? Yes, but sometimes I don't manage and then I find these protein things are super filling and actually keep me going in the same way as if I'd have had a meal. That being said they do upset my stomach so I try to save them as back up plans in an emergency...
Hell yes
Whole Foods all the way. If you have time to prepare a shake you have time to grab a piece of fruit or a handful of nuts. I saw the ingredients for a protein shake once and it went on and on and on...with things in it that I have no idea what it is or what it means. I try to minimize putting stuff in my body that I have no idea what it is.
I agree we can get it from real food, but surely if we're going to the gym / working at home to try and increase muscle mass extra protein wont go to waste? Indeed, isn't it needed?
Having said that I wonder if there is an issue about timing - I only eat in the evening so I've assumed my exercise in the day is using stuff - inc protein - stored from the night before. Do you think it would be better to eat before &/or after rather than sticking to intermittent fasting?
If youre not getting enough protein... drink a protein shake. A shake is 75 calories
Im sorry but you made no points in what you were saying... 'the demands of high intensity execrsie' that means nothing. Then you wildly claim its force-feeding. If youre a vegetarian or flexitarian - protein shakes are gr8 to hav enouh protein to maintain or gain muscle. Yes I will ignore anymore comments since Im an actual Biologist so I know more about the body than you do.
This isn't my area at all as I don't do a great deal of exercise but how does a protein shake compare (in protein terms) with a couple of boiled eggs or 30gms of cheese or 100 mls Greek yoghurt?
An egg is 6g of protein - you'd need about 5 eggs a day to make up a protein shake (25-30g). Obviously this would require you having eggs, cooking time and more eating time. Additionally you'd also be taking in lots more cholesterol.
It was a genuine query. As I say, I don't do much exercise. So you need to supplement your diet by that amount of protein?
By the way, HeartUK is clear that dietary cholesterol being to blame for raised blood cholesterol is a myth.
Well you need around 60g on average of protein or something (varied wirh height and comp etc). So if you are vegetarian/flexi it is very possible not to make the 60g. The shake will just allow you to make up the ground or give you a litrle extra if youre active and want to build muscle. Ofc if youre not an active person then you'll need less food in general and wont need excess protein since youre not promoting growth.
