Lacking Motivation

Hi. I'm new to all this, so hoping I'll find inspiration. I am a 58 year old male, and following unusual presentations whilst at work yesterday I was blue lighted to hospital where I was initially seen by the stroke nurse. Following a C.T. scan and numerous tests , it was concluded that I had probably suffered a mini stroke.

I cycle and walk, but suffering with social anxiety find it really difficult to motivate myself to do either more than once or twice each week.

I know that I eat a lot of the wrong food types, and at the wrong times of day (always skip breakfast but snack in the evenings)

My problem is that I seem to use food as some kind of emotional support, and can't seem to kick the bad eating habits that have developed over the years.

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated

Hi, what a terrible shock you must have had! I can understand how frightening it must have been for you. Use this as a springboard to change your lifestyle if your weight is high (you don't say if you need to lose weight but I assume, since you're here that you do). I would start with your food, no amount of exercise can outrun a bad diet. Plan your meals better and find something to do in the evenings so that you don't snack. I hope you find the forum useful. You can do this, believe in yourself!!

Hello 4kix and welcome to the Weight Loss Forum

Im sorry to hear about you health issue and glad that you have joined us today to tackle your eating. Emotional eating is a biological response but one that can be avoided with practice. You seem to understand yourself well enough and I hope we can give you the advice and support you need.

Here are a few suggestions on how to get the most out of the forum. Please note if you are using the new HU App many of these features are not available so I suggest you use the full website version.

The first place to look is at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), read the Welcome Newbie thread first and move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you. Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news

Have a look at the NHS 12 week plan, as many people have had success with it. Also use the BMI checker to find your target calories, it's important to eat enough. This was a major turning point for me, realising I could eat anything I wanted as long as the calories are accounted for. Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate

The forum also have group weigh-ins every day, as well as a new Daily Diary, if you wish to take part. The posts can always be found in the Events section on the 'home' page. And if you just want to chat, to say hello or share any news or struggles then look out for What's Happening Today thread.

You'll notice a grey box next to people's names, these are achievement badges, and as a new member you have a 'Newbie' badge. We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too. If you have any questions please just ask

Best wishes

Anna

like others have said "put past failures behind you" and concentrate on NOW... all of us have tried every diet going and have had ups and downs along the way... think about why you want to lose this weight... maybe before it was for a holiday or special occasion but this time its different cos youve had a wake up call with your health scare ! i was diagnosed with high blood pressure in dec16 and have used that as my motivation as im a mother of 3 and the thought of having a stroke and not being able to look after my kids was just not going to happen !!!... ive since joined a gym and lost 2 stone and have normal.blood pressure again.

you need to find your motivation inside yourself to get healthy for life this time by eating better and moving more every day.

good luck with finding it x

Really appreciate your input Claz. It's crazy, when my head is 'right', I can cycle 70+ miles in one ride. I have to accentuate the positives here, and heed what my body is telling me with these warnings.

It's really great to read success storie such as yours. Well done, and thank you for sharing it with me. I will use your experience to inspire my actions x

im the same as you with exercise .... im an all or nothing sort of girl and i put everything into it... but if something goes wrong then that is my danger time and i ended up stopping completely... you got to find a balance that you can do consistantly and one that can be part of your weekly routine... im struggling at the moment as i broke my leg 2 weeks ago and cant exercise at the moment.... but in my head i am thinking once this cast is off i will be back swimming to strengthen it so that i can then get walking again.. then running again.... this is my motivation at the time and im not thinking about weight loss at the moment.

i never would have thought about exercise like this a year ago but exercise is part of my life now and i dont want to stop doing it...

Set yourself a plan of when you will exercise during the week and try to stick with it... this is what i did and built up to 5 days a week with 2 rest days...

good luck x
