I don't really count calories (but have a rough idea of how many I consume). From experience, for me, if I just eat three smallish, balanced meals made up of good, nutritious, 'natural' food, and allow one or two small snacks a day, I can lose weight without formal calorie counting.
I have a good idea of the calorie value of foods though, and know which ones are high in calories. I tread lightly around them. Similarly, I know which ones are low in calories and I can eat a bit more of them.
For me it is more about being in control of my eating habits (and the quantities I eat) than calories as such. But in the end the goal is the same: to eat less than we need for weight maintenance (or to eat little enough to lose).
Well done! I'm starting today and, like you, am calorie counting and trying to back sure that the calories I consume are nutritious ones.
