Hi,

It's obviously not a 'healthy option' but as many folk say if you ban something from your menu you will crave it more. Try to limit it to say once a week and count it in your daily calorie allowance. I usually have pasta once a week with a piece of garlic bread or a piece of one of those yummy tear & share flatbreads. (Previously I would have eaten a whole one!!)

It brings to mind the comment of a slender friend who says it would be decadant to have marmalade on your toast except at weekends!

good luck

Hi Bofaleena,

It's not the garlic that's the problem!

How about the "substitution" trick? There's a number of quite nice garlic and herb crackers in the shops these days. Perhaps one or two of those as a snack instead of some bread and garlic butter. Or perhaps a bit of crispbread with something nice and garlicky (or spicy) on it?

Or, as already mentioned, perhaps - on occasion - a moderate amount of garlic bread isn't the end of the world.

I guess the scales will the judge of that!

Good luck with your weight loss journey.

Know the feeling well!

Popcorn (microwave or DIY kind) is quite good, savoury and filling! Also those habas fritas (roasted dried broad beans, sounds weird but they're nice) are good. And olives, too, although they tend to be a love 'em or loathe 'em food.

Good luck, don't lose heart!

Maybe try grilling wholemeal pitta with a very light spreading of low-fat butter and finely chopped garlic - infact, might try this myself!

You could ditch carbs and eat garlic mushrooms or garlic prawns cooked in butter. Butter isn't restricted if carbs are. Depends which part of garlic bread you crave most, really.

The other thing that works for me is to imagine I'm eating it. I know it sounds mad but if your brain thinks you have eaten something (because you have sat visualising yourself eating it for a couple of minutes) sometimes that's enough to satisfy your craving. Scientists have recently discovered that people who look at lots of pictures of food or food itself without eating it, have far reduced cravings and eat less. Hence the skinny chef, I suppose. Anyway, after reading that I discovered my imagination was strong enough to do the same thing without actual visual cues. I was really addicted to chocolate biscuits last month. 40 days later I don't even think about them and have lost a stone and a half.

Oh, and dieter01, low-fat butter? Really? Have you missed the whole transfats thing?

I mix very light spread with garlic and mixed herbs, toast a slice of bread one side, turn over, lightly toast the other side then spread garlic mixture on, toast a little more until melted and heated through, yum yum
