Recently PCOS diagnosed

Hey guys another newbie here, just got Diagnosed with PCOS recently, I’m 20 yrs old and when I first realised I had PCOS I was a crying mess due to the associated fertility issues. And now that the GP has confirmed the diagnosis, she wants me to choose a medication, so either the combined pill or progesterone only.

I don’t know which one to choose, and do u guys know any other options for us in the UK?

As I don’t want to go on birth control, but the GP insists it’s the only thing 🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️

Hi, taking the pill for PCOS does not solve any issues. In fact it suppress' the issue. When you get your "period", its not really a period. The pill just makes you bleed but doesn't do any of the functions like a normal period cycle would (e.g. releasing eggs, lining the uterus etc). If you have instagram I highly suggest following pages like @pcos.weightloss where they talk about reversing the effects (cysts, fatigue, weight issues) through controlling your diet (GF, DF) and your exercise routine! Ive had PCOS for over 10 years now, and my diet is KEY in making me feel better and making sure I have a regular, non-medicated, cycle! I hope this helps!

Hello!!!Thank you so much, I do already follow PCOS.weightloss, and i mentioned OVASITOL and diet to the GP, but she kinda ignored that. So do u that and medication or supplements, or is ur treatment entirely based on diet and lifestyle?

I try to avoid having anything medication based, just because I think dealing with things in a natural way will have better long term results. So (as hard as it is!) I cut out processed sugars as much as possible. I KNOW it feels like you'll always crave it but try replacing those sugary snacks with fruits or maybe savoury items. I also try my hardest to go dairy free, with oat milk and coconut based yogurts. Gluten free is a struggle with me, because I can taste the difference with bread so instead of completely cutting out bread I just try to reduce it. Just incorporate as many veg as possible in your foods, if I make anything I just add a few pieces of broccoli on the side or like spinach in my eggs etc. its just small changes which will help you feel better.

I must also say that for me exercise can be a chore, but when I focus on my exercise habits I see a huge difference. I tend to feel fatigued and can get stressed out which makes me want to eat more, but when exercising this happens less. Structure when you eat and having routine Is so underestimated!

I hope this helps. I feel like ive struggled with Pcos so much and have read everything tried everything and am finallyy getting a handle on it. its scary when you go to a doctor, because they don't seem to care enough to try to help. They see it in so many women, they think its normal and don't take the effort to realise how many things in your life it affects, especially outside issues like weight and pregnancy. But remember you're not alone!! just a little bit of reading and understanding what it is, you can resolve it and get your cycle right and feel much better!

I’ve suffered with pcos quite badly since I’ve been 15. I’m on the combined pill and personally for me it’s done wonders in managing my symptoms. I don’t experience my migraines as frequently anymore and my bloating as often. Diet change helped aswell I stopped having dairy. However it’s what ever you feels works best for you .

Hello! Just to say, I also have PCOS and going on the pill is absolutely not the only option. GPs push you towards that as it masks the symptoms and is a quick fix for them. Worth having a good talk about your blood tests because they can show up what is really going on. I was told to go on the pill too (having just come off it and then was told it was PCO) but I absolutely refused and made them look into it more. Now, I have regular periods ( an absolute first for me!), skin problems under control and feel my best.

It may work great for you to be on the pill but it is worth knowing it definitely isn’t the only option and as a long term option it can have some effects that take time to recover from (from my own experience).

I would also ask if you are insulin resistant because many people with PCOS are and if you are it is worth trying a low glycemic diet and seeing if that helps. It will take a while to make a difference but it is amazing what you can achieve without going on the pill. For me, it’s definitely worth the wait!

Good luck!

Hi my I think my daughter has PCOD she’s gone to the doctor today and had a blood test but reading this site everything seems to add up. She has no symptoms other than has not really ever had a period. She was on the pill for a while but prior to that and since she’s never had a period.

I’m interested to understand what options you were given other than the pill which is now made your periods more regular?
