I’m 24 and I had an ultrasound scan on Monday due to having some irregular heavy bleeding (a brief background: I haven’t had a period in 4 years which the doctors had originally put down to the fact I’m underweight). During the scan, they noted that my ovaries were enlarged and that I probably have PCOS.
I’m off to the doctors on Friday to talk the results of the scan through and probably have some blood tests. I was just wondering if anyone had any advice on what questions I should be asking the doctors?
Also, I don’t suffer from any other of the common symptoms except for the lack of periods. My BMI is underweight and I have been blessed with clear skin having never suffered from acne or excess hair. Is this common? Could it be something other than PCOS?
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I’m just a bit overwhelmed with not knowing at the moment. 😳
Generally your symptoms may be better as you are normal weight or underweight (as long as it isn't too much). Low GI generally is what they will recommend. The combined pill can help control all the symptoms but as you don't have any generally I would just make sure the GP gives you something to force a period 4 times a year to keep your uterus healthy. Their are long term consequences of pcos like diabetes/heart disease but generally it is the weight gain that it can cause that increases the risk of these. I am overweight by about a stone and do not have diabetes or insulin resistant but I do watch what I eat and have done for about 25 years !!!
Thank you for the advice. I’ve been reading about the effects of not having periods and I’m surprised my doctor didn’t mention it sooner! I’ll definitely be asking about that on Friday.
