I have had the most awful migraine for two days. I am on 10mg of Prednisolone a day, what can I take to help with my migraine as Paracetamol is not helping at all.

Hi Lou, just seen your other question which answers mine. Now before l devoloped Xasculitis l went through a terrible period - 'cuse the pun - of migranies. l was having a 3/4 day migraine every 2 weeks; l had to fill out an oestrogen card, which showed that the migraines were caused by me ovaulating, then menstrating. My GP sent me to a neuro bod - female - who was brilliant, she gave me a tablet to put under my tongue - 1 tab in 24hrs - and the dreaded Ms were under control; they lasted for quite a few years. Unfortunately it was 23 yrs ago and l can't remember what they were. Hope this helps a little bit. Sally

Hi Lou , not pleasant to be having migraines

I agree see your GP, but assuming it’s migraine see my reply to Sima re ginger.

If you can identify any triggers and avoid that can help a lot eg for myself sourdough bread will often trigger them but only if I’m having a cluster of migraines, most of the time I tolerate sourdough bread fine

Hi Sima1952

Ginger

For my migraines I chew thin slices of ginger root 3-4 thumbnail size, let the fragments disintegrate and allow absorption through your mouth. No need to swallow. I leave it in my mouth for at least 5-10 minutes then spit it out. Works effectively 90% of the time. I’m a GP myself I was rather dubious when I first heard of the research (randomised double blind controlled trial ginger vs sumatriptan) showed equal efficacy (effectiveness) with effectively no side effects. Since then I’ve very rarely required the sumatriptan. It usually works within 10-15 minutes. Sometimes if I feel one coming on I chew ginger straight away and it may well abort the intense pain emerging. The tryptan family includes many brand names including wafers, tablets and nasal sprays. They work by constricting arteries which is why they aren’t safe if one has vascular disease, and potentially can cause a heart attack if susceptible, hence ginger is very reassuring. I found just chewing without swallowing was fast and effective and didn’t cause any indigestion. I suggest this to my patients.

Best wishes

Thank you for the info, fortunately - cross fingers - l haven't had a migranie for 11 years now but they were murder at the time. :-)

If you haven't had migraines/severe headaches before, or only rarely, I would suggest you consult your GP as soon as you can.
