This is an extract from the Organ Donor site, in response to the question "Can I be a donor with an existing medical condition?"

"Yes, in most circumstances. Having a medical condition does not necessarily prevent a person from becoming an organ or tissue donor. The decision about whether some or all organs or tissue are suitable for transplant is made by a healthcare professional, taking into account your medical history.

There is only one condition where organ donation is ruled out completely. A person cannot become an organ or tissue donor if they have, or are suspected of having, CJD. In very rare cases, the organs of donors with HIV or hep C have been used to help others with the same conditions. This is only ever carried out when both parties have the condition. All donors have rigorous checks to guard against infection."

Just for the record, in the US people with autoimmune disease are not allowed to donate. It's very complicated criteria but if you Google

aotaonline.org/organ-donati...

it gives a pretty thorough account. So if anyone in the States wants to be an organ donor read this first. It may save you a trip as there are quite a lot of exclusions. It is truly a great gift you give, not just to the donor but to all who come to love the recipient. Like a seed you plant that blossoms into a bouquet.

Warm wishes,

Canary

Dear BerkshireBird,

I assume, in that I've never heard to the contrary, that 'we' can be organ donors- I know for an absolute certainty, having had a kidney transplant, that we can receive organs. Some of the other responses, particularly regarding the USA, were interesting/eye opening, mind.

I don't think that this has added much but still.....

Kind regards AndrewT
