Hello Kidney transplant community.

Filmed up in Glasgow in October - less than two weeks later I got the call for my second kidney transplant. 9 months on - here is my first Tedx talk to share into the world!

I hope you enjoy. One day at a time.

Doing very well thanks Lisa. Fortunate to have many tools to help. You might also be interested in Kidney Beam. We launched just this week. It's funded by Kidney Research UK and in collaboration with the amazing renal physios at King's. I've joined to lead the yoga sessions. It's free for kidney peeps. beamfeelgood.com/onDemand/l...

Do you know if the use of essential oil is safe for transplant patients?

That's a yes or no question and there are very few questions that have a yes or no answer!

I use them regularly. I didn't in the first few months post transplant, just as that felt right. I kept things super simple. But they are weaving back in again. I've enjoyed researching them over a number of years. Also, I always trust my intuition on what works for me. e.g black pepper is amazing - very helpful when I had a pseudo-gout presentation a few years ago. Along with other things I did. However was topically very relieving. You can always start by diffusing them. I used tea tree a lot when lockdown started going into Kings for bloods etc. A couple of dabs under my nose. Lavender and rose are usually very safe and gentle healing oils. I have a current blend made by my massage therapist/aromatherapist with those oils that I massage into my chest before bed at the moment. Bliss. Super for emotional healing too. Those are personal views as I am not a qualified aromatherapist! In short though. They are amazing. As a yoga teacher, in physical classes and with clients, I would use them a lot in final relaxation, for example. Tree oils are great for grounding. Explore and tune in. Anything that doesn't feel right, always honour that.

Haha I didn't mean it as a yes and no question but am glad to that you didn't answer it as such. I love them too and use them topically with carrier oil. I do wonder about each oil's potential interaction effect with the drugs we take because that hasn't been researched at all. Even without ingesting them our skin can still take active compounds in and I use them pretty regularly.

Of course. Everything operates at an energetic cellular vibration. I'm not aware of drug interactions in this regard. None of the oils as far as I know upregulate cytochrome P450. Many will help reduce cortisol and lower blood pressure via various mechanisms. and hence temper inflammation. Everyone is unique though is we know. . Inflammation - that's what you really want to be mindful of in anything you take in food/drink/emotional relationship wise. Everything's connected. Perhaps just swerve grapefruit oil if you're concerned. If you love them and are using them, then perhaps explore more the oils you are using. I took Frankincense into the hospital when I got the kidney call and used it a lot over the week I was there. A very sacred oil. Enjoy the exploration. Happy weekend. Best, Ciara

Hi Ciara,

I love Frankincense! It is grounding and makes everything works better when combined.

I wouldn't expect EOs to neccesarily upregulate Cyp450s, but "compete" with immunosupressants in utilizing Cyp450 enzymes. This is the reason EOs are toxic to dogs and cats because they lack the enzymes to metabolize them. Although humans do, the shared metabolism pathway with the drug we take had me wonder about the degree of modulation EO may have on drug metabolism rate. We will never know without a well controlled study but I was wondering about your personal experience. Have you noticed any changes on your trough level using different type of individual EOs?
