Tinnitus change due to mirtazapine

I have been prescribed 15mg of mirtazapine for depression and anxiety. I have taken this for 5 days with slight reduction in my tinnitus. I woke up this morning with increased tinnitus (hissing). I am really worried about this. Any advice?

Hi, my tinnitus was very discrete and habituate with it for ten years. After this years I was diagnosed with anxiety and mild depression and prescribed Mirtazapine. First a quarter, after one month a half and everything was fine for another three months when raised my dose to one pill. After two weeks suddenly my tinnitus became very worst. If it was like between 2 to10, now it raised to 8 to 10. I stopped the medication but my tinnitus remained very loud. In my opinion Mirtazapine was the trigger but we will never know. We are not same all and we have different reactions, better for ones and worst for others. You just have to get use to it. I didnt, I have changes in volume or frequency every day and at night I cant sleep. At 3 am the sound get higher and higher. Wish you all the best and most important quietness.

So sorry this happened to you. I hadn't heard my T for 15 years. It only took 5 statins to take me back 20 years. I'm more upset than angry. Life goes on , I will not stop doing all the things I want to do ( except listen to music which does make it worse). Good luck with your habituation.

Hello Edward

It's difficult to identify sometimes how much of the tinnitus seeming louder to us is a genuine change or the adjustment process to antidepressent medication taking a while.

Noticing tinnitus at quieter times isn't a problem - it's something of a universal experience. What perhaps will help is to acknowledge that this is the case and to do things to establish some normalcy so that the least amount of time possible is spent reacting to tinnitus.

"It's there - it's a noise - now, what's for breakfast?" is the approach that I would personally take, although I recognize that not everyone feels able to deal with tinnitus on that level.

If your medication is sympatico with your symptoms, this may not be a long term issue that you need to be prepared for - if your depression and anxiety issues can be supported by this medication, the possibility of your tinnitus seeming less of a problem would be a good outcome.
