Mirtazapine connection?

Cantstandthis profile image

I've been prescribed mirtazapine for depression etc due to things happening over the last few years and topped off with tinnitus in my left ear. The tinnitus has got louder and my hearing is almost totally lost after only 3 days. Anyone else taking meds that may possibly affect it? Thanks. Also, if I put my hearing aid in to try to mask it will it get worse when I take it out? Ta

I've been on Miterzapine for years. It's never affected my T.

Thank you. That reassuring about the meds. Just got to work out why my hearing has suddenly got so much worse.

If it has suddenly got much, much worse then that's an Urgent Referral to Audiology by your GP. Make sure he/ she marks it up as Urgent.

Ok. Is it important? I had a private mri done and they said it was ok, about a month ago.

Really depends on how quickly your hearing has depleted. You say it almost completely went over the course of three days - that would warrant and urgent referral in my book.

How is your hearing now? - has it come back? stayed the same?

It goes up and down. Now the t is bubbling in my ear but I have a hearing aid in although I still dont hear much. Sometimes it feels like my whole head is full up but I still hear from my right ear. I cant do much today as its sunday.

You say bubbling - is it fluid in the ear? Have you had a wax removal done recently?

No, it's just the noise it makes sometimes. I had a blocked eustachian tube in jan which cleared apparently but left this tinnitus and hearing loss. ENT cant work it out just said it was sudden hearing loss or something.

Are you using methods to clear your Eustachan Tubes regularly - such as Sterimar, balloon, etc?

They can really help keep them clear and at least quieten the noise somewhat. Every little helps!

I dont have anything. Once they said it was clear they just didnt bother with it anymore. What's sterimar or balloon?

Both are good at clearing blocked Eustachian Tubes - I use them regularly during a blocked episode and the Sterimar clears it in a couple of days of using morning and evening.

That's the one you want.

The Otovent balloon is more hardcore if the Sterimar doesn't open up things.

Thank you. I'll take a look. I've never had blocked tubes before and am a bit worried about catching a cold and it getting worse!

Good. Do. It's one of those small pieces in our toolbox to manage the T.

If doing it decreases it - great - I'll do it. I find clearing the Eustachian Tubes (on spec) can quieten the noise - so it's just a part of my routine. Your mileage may vary but I do know that clear, breathing and adjusted Eustachian Tubes give my Severe Tinnitus no excuses to be over-loud.

I wish you peace.
