Hearing aids & tinnitus

Am interested to hear...pardon the pun...from anyone who has found hearing aids helpful with tinnitus.I lost the hearing in my left ear 3 years ago & gained tinnitus which screeches, beeps, howls & various other noises. My hopes were built up when first hearing aid was fitted & told that most people found their tinnitus virtually disappeared with this Phonak aid.Mine didn't & a change of aid made it worse.

Has anyone benefitted from a particular sort of aid please

I find that hearing aids do help - since the real world is clearer and so the phantom of tinnitus is less disruptive.

Thanks for responding. My tinnitus does not calm down with aid,it is the constant nature of it that drives me nuts.

k have had hearing aids for my hearing and tinnitus I have found out over the years it’s helped me control my bad tinnitus I got my damage to my right ear due to my brain aneurysm in 2009

I'm with happyrosie - my aids allow me to hear the World as it should be and the Tinnitus gets kind of elbowed aside in the process. It's like my brain "has better things to listen to."

(I had sudden 40% hearing loss result of cervical injury in accident)

Thanks for responding. My sudden hearing loss was 90% & it took me a while to come to terms with balance issues that came with it.The tinnitus is another story

Bloody hell - 90% sudden - I thought my 40% sudden was rough - you poor soul. So really, the aids are a must.

Have you talked to Audiology about tweaking frequency responses and any bakground stuff. When I go to Audiology we can fine tune my aids, etc?

18 months ago I invested in expensive aids (thankfully on 60 day money back clause), but they made my T worse. I understood there was no guarantee that T would improve, but was never told it could make worse until I went back. I’m of a mind they were almost too technical and being connected to WiFi/bluetooth didn’t help.

It has remained worse since and at times the volume is very testing to say the least. I’m tempted to try simple NHS ones to see if I can get some relief.

Thank you for your response,I initially had a Phonak aid,Wifi& Bluetooth enabled, which helped with hearing but not with T,after a change in hearing I was given a Danalogic,it whistles & falls out of my ear and is so uncomfortable.Am now back to Phonak which stays in & I can adjust it.Waiting for a reassessment to see what can be done.

I went down the same path. Very expensive (£3500) aids from Amplifon that made no difference to my hearing or my tinnitus. I hated them as they made everything too trebly and very unnatural despite going back several times for adjustments. I was also on the free trial and gave them back. My doctor referred me for a hearing test at Specsavers and now I have a pair of Phonak (NHS) ones. They haven't made any difference to my tinnitus either but are good for listening to podcasts and calls.

I had exactly the same experience when I tried a very expensive pair of hearing aids before Christmas. Thank goodness for the 60 day trial! I have had tinnitus for 40 years and it has steadily worsened, exacerbated by recent hearing loss in one ear. The spike caused by trialing the hearing aids has not reduced since, and like you, I'm not sure of what to do next. Sorry not to be able to help, but you do not suffer alone!

Not for me. I was given hearing aids (Phonak from NHS) as I've lost a lot of hearing above about 7k. They made no difference to my tinnitus but they are good for podcasts and calls!

I have an Oticon (NHS) hearing aid in my left ear and have found it very helpful. I had no idea that my hearing was so bad and as I can hear other sounds more clearly this distracts me from the racket of T.

Hi, I had a hearing test last august. 40% left 80% right. Suffer from balance problems and Tinnitus after stroke 22 months ago. Audiologist assured me Tinnitus and balance would be improves from hearing aids. Had them fitted 2 months ago..... no improvement whatsoever.

Hopefully its early days.

Take care.

Hello to you.

I have NHS Oticon hearing aids and find that a cleaner sound signal means I can hear people talking, which I struggle without.

Overall, while I still feel a stigma attached to hearing aides, unlike the acceptance of glasses to correct sight, I find the more positive than negative. Yes I still hear my T and most days they have very little effect, my T is worse without them. Hope this makes sense.

Very best - Graham

Hello NonstopI have had tinnitus for almost 2 years . I also have phonak hearing aide . It was programmed by my audiologist . It has a masker program. The noise the program makes sounds just like the noise made when very large semi truck tire has a hole puncture . It hisses very loudly. So loudly my sister can sometimes hear it ( in church or if we are at the movie theatre) but thankfully somehow it helps.

Sincerely

Aesop

I bought Signia hearing aid with masking sound. In USA price $5,000. Top of the line. Audiologist good at programming a sound that helps on a bad tinnitus day. I went back for more tweaking because I had to push on it to hear masking sound. She gave me a cone type thing on the aid and it is good now. I can go back anytime for tweaking the masking sound.

Hi Nonstopnoise for me, as a suffer of multiple noises. Since as far back as I can remember like 50 years. I've recently been given by an amazing audiologist a pair of oticon sage hearing aids. I have only slight hearing loss but highly distressing tinnitus. So far the hearing aids are helping. My audiologist has programmed them to something called shaped noise. Sounds like the Australian jungle like cicadas chirping. Far more pleasant than a car alarm that won't stop. However by early evening the car alarm starts to drown out the jungle. But its still easier to cope with. Even though the T starts to overpower the rainforest, its only for a few hours before bed. Every second isn't fight or flight anymore. Eveey second isn’t like the volume control is stuck on full and the panic it causes, but permanently. So yes H A's can help. I won't give them up now. My general hearing has improved and I can stream audio through them. I feel a bit relaxed aswell. For the first time in my life. I knew my audiologist had tinnitus himself by the way he just understood what i was saying and feeling. He's certainly given me some relief from the purgatory of T. I hope you find something to help yours. It's not nice at all and only a few people really understand. It effects different people different ways. I so wish I could not be bothered by it. But it always has with me as it seems organic and is constantly changing pich tone and sound. On top of pieces of music usually something I hate. And last but not least. Hearing the phantom doorbell in the middle of the night or a loud bang. I think it's Mr T's way of dominating my sleep aswell. All the best hope the future treats you well.
