Hi All, new to this site. I have had tinnitus for some time and been able to cope with it due to having hearing aids as I have hearing loss in both ears , but recently my tinnitus got louder and happens on and off.

Please may I have help on this for my tinnitus?

Thanks

Hi CMRN11

Can you point to anything specific which seems to occur prior to or alongside these changes in your tinnitus?

My tinnitus is constant but then on Saturday I heard a louder noise which made me worried. I believe they call it a tinnitus spike. I have been getting them more regularly. Is there anyway to reduce the tinnitus spikes and tinnitus

A tinnitus spike, for most people, is an increase which occurs during a period of time - it can be related to a specific incident or experience, but doesn't have to be prompted by anything particular.

Tinnitus spikes, for many people, are part of the process of habituating to the condition. The best way to manage them is to be clear that this is what is happening and to not attach any specific meaning to them.

The more that we scrutinise or analyse tinnitus spikes, the greater importance we give them and the more attention we pay to them. That can make our brain characterize tinnitus spikes as being something we need to pay attention to, when in fact they're not important or that meaningful at all.

Distraction, relaxation and finding things to do which you want to do are the worst enemy that tinnitus has. If you are not reacting to a sound, if you are not caring about it or being in any way interested in it, your brain will pick up on how you view it, how you are responding to it and will start to give it less and less attention.

For me what I discovered is that, if I go to bed in the night with a stomach full, then the following day my tinnitus will be above the roof. So I avoid eating supper...
