Tinnitus through Loud Concert

Hi Everyone,

I am new here, I just wanted to share my experience to see if anyone else has been through the same or something similar to mine. I am 29 years old, and I attended a very loud concert with my sister 3 weeks ago, it was a very small venue and the concert lasted 1hr. After the concert my ears were muffled which i thought was normal and would go away. But I also had this very loud high pitched ringing noise, the muffled hearing went away, but the loud ringing hasn’t gone away. I don’t normally attend concerts or any loud places, so this was a very rare occasion for me. I have been overwhelmed and stressed recently with my uni work so I am not sure if the tinnitus is lingering around due to my stress and anxiety. It could be a bit of both but I am not sure of this yet.

If anyone else has experience a similar situation to mine, I would be grateful to get for advice or experience as to if yours eventually went away?

Thank you 🙂

Your tinnitus may slowly go away as your hearing can still repair itself & your blood pressure & stress can aggravate it. If you still have tinnitus after 6 Months, it is most likely permanent & some hearing damage has probably occurred from the loud noise exposure. I developed the same situation at 18 Years old in a Nightclub and like many people, it has never gone away.

For the next 6 Months, you need to protect your hearing & avoid using headphones & or ear buds for an extended time, if you do, keep the volume very low and let your ears have lots of rest. Even mobile phones & speaker phones can be high pitched decibels, if used for hours a day, which can aggravate & prolong the tinnitus.

Your ears may recover & the tinnitus may fade into the background as your Brain ignores it or some healing occurs. Tinnitus is also the 1st signs of possible hearing damage & also a warning the Noise was too loud for you, even if your Tinnitus goes away in the next few months, for the rest of your life, you will need to keep protecting your hearing & things like loud concerts will need ear plugs.

You may wish to get a doctors appointment & discuss the issue with them, they may prescribe 'Prednisolone', which can help repair any hearing damage if taken within a few weeks of loud noise exposure, they can also check your blood pressure & discuss any Stress issue, which can keep the tinnitus in your mind.

Hopefully, it will go away for you, but, it may not go away and you may have to live with it or refocus your mind to ignore it, which isn't easy, you should still get a Doctors appointment & discuss the options with them & they can also check your ears, as you may also have ear wax or something else aggravating it. Good Luck.

Hi Dazza2024

Thank you so much for getting back to me, I appreciate your response. I just have a few questions to ask if you don’t mind :)

-How long have you had it for?

- And has it ever stopped for a few days and came back or has it been continuous?

- Did you have multiple exposures to loud noise and night clubs regularly or was it just the one occasion?

I have been back and forth to the Doctors as I have been having anxiety and panic attacks with this, its really effected me in a big way. The Doctors at first said that it was barotrauma and didn’t prescribe me with anything and said that it would go away by itself. Then I went back and have asked them to refer me to ENT so now I am just waiting for an appointment. They did check my blood pressure and everything was normal.

Did you try Prednisolone? Is it good? I will ask my Doctor for some tomorrow when I speak with them.

I hope it does go away, but each week that goes by i am losing hope :( the noise has been constant and hasn’t changed at all since I have had it 😞 surely if it was going away I would have some decrease in noise or something, or would it just suddenly stop. Im not sure 🤔

My Tinnitus has never gone away & it started from a one time exposure & it is continuous & all my friends were fine, they never had it, many people have one time exposures & tinnitus. Tinnitus often starts out loud, then goes quieter, then every very loud noise exposure, it was loud again & then quieter & often repeated it then is less chance of going away or going quieter. For me, it has got louder recently & I am not sure why, it maybe natural aging, but, I also think from too much loud noise like car alarms, house alarms, dogs barking, traffic noise & traffic horns beeping and not enough rest & for me as I am aging also.

Prednisolone can be hit & miss, it can repair the hearing for some people within 6 months. I am still taking Prednisolone for a week to see if it helps my tinnitus out, I started late for it, as I was on other meds & hoping mine would naturally heal. For some people Prednisolone helps out quite a bit, but, everyone is different. Your doctor can advise on this for you.

You are still young, so there is a chance it will go away or fade into the background & your ears can take some time to heal, this includes from air bag trauma in vehicles which is up to 6 months & many people can recover in this time frame & have done so, as in research papers & for trauma in Air Bag Explosions, which is pretty significant & much louder noise exposure.

Often the Tinnitus will be loud at first & then it slowly goes down in volume if your hairs stand back up again from being weakened or bent over from loud noise exposure, but, I then started going to Nightclubs and it took a few days to go back down & it got worse and longer to recover each time, then I wore ear plugs & then I stopped going as it was too risky. I have had tinnitus for 32+ Years, it has never really bothered me as I could hardly hear it at first, unless I was trying to sleep & I put a fan on to mask the noise, but, in the last year, it has gone up a few times in loudness and for me, it is quite bad at the moment.

There is various support groups & advice online, you need to try and ignore it and that is not easy to do often when you first experience it. The ENT appointment with the NHS, maybe months away. You could try and find out how long a wait it is in your area & look at getting a private hearing test & advice & not just specsavers, as they are not the same in depth test & advice as a private clinic.

There is no quick fix solution & unfortunately, you need to have positive thoughts & focus on things like happy thoughts & hope in some ways your ears heal, as they may well do & in a few months, your ears may heal & you won't hear any tinnitus at all, then from this moment onwards, take precautions around very loud noise.

For some positive vibes - Watching some of these videos maybe helpful, but, try not to think about it to much, you may have an early tinnitus spike warning which could heal and go away with a bit more time & a few weeks rest. -

I also agree with RKAUF's reply about finding support if you need it. Although, your tinnitus may also go away, you don't want to spend hrs a day focussing on it or looking for a 'Cure', as there is no such thing as a 'Cure'. Spending too much time worrying about it or searching for answers Daily, can also keep the Brain active in constantly focussing on it, which is a circle of stress that increases & often Blood Pressure & Stress can just make the tinnitus seem louder.

Try & spend some time, thinking about Yoga & sea waves & holidays, there is various masking noises on YouTube, like Sea Waves & Crickets & Rain Showers, these are up to 10hrs long, so you can play those in the day or when trying to sleep, let the brain focus on these sounds, as also this allows the brain to divert attention away from the tinnitus & to the calming & relaxing sounds, you could play them thru Bluetooth ear buds or a headband, but, keep the volume low and your stress & anxiety will start to relax a little bit more over time.

I also have some Citalopram, which I will be starting soon, this may help reduce my Tinnitus level, as often Tinnitus can come from the Brain as well. You could ask your doctor about 'Citalopram' & see what they suggest, as this also works well for quite a few people. You are still in the early stages of tinnitus, so as in the above comments, you still have a good chance of your ears healing & it going away completely, after 6 Months, if you can still hear it, then unfortunately, this is then classed as permanent and you need to then learn to live with it, which isn't easy at first.

Hi,

Thank you for getting back to me. I have managed to get some prednisolone from my Doctors, he has given me 2mg to take one a day. I have taken one today and didn’t notice any difference so maybe I have to take them for a bit longer to notice anything.

My Ent appointment is on the 2nd July.

Im still finding it hard to come to terms with this ringing, it feels so loud and Tuesday it will be 4 weeks since it started after the concert. Is it normal for it to be like this 4 weeks in, even for people that it has gone away for?

Thank you for sending me the YouTube channel I found some comfort in these videos.

I just want my life to get back to normal at the moment it feels very difficult. 😞

Prednisolone may do something or not, but, it is often given, as for some people it does help & restore tinnitus & hearing, it may take a while for you to notice anything or not, but, it is best to always try it. In some case research papers, it was shown that USA Citizens that experienced vehicle accidents & air bag trauma with damaged hearing & tinnitus, some people recovered or partially recovered, it took up to 6 Months for the data to be accepted as accurate. With some hearing restored & less tinnitus loudness between 3-4 & 5 Months & less tinnitus often occurring with time to heal. This showed some recovery is still possible in the 3-6mths time period. Unfortunately, you need to keep resting your ears and hope the tinnitus subsides and there is still a good chance it might.

The ENT appointment, should be a hearing test and this may show an issue or not. If you do have hearing loss damage, then you may need a hearing aid to mask it out, but, this is the future and you may still fully recover over the next few weeks. Tinnitus is often caused by loud noise exposure and the hair cells being bent or weakened, there is thoughts, some hair cells do go back to being straight up again & for other people they may just die. As this is still early stages of your tinnitus, only time will tell or after 6 months. For many other people, the tinnitus can also fade into the background, as the brain ignores the sound and this can still take a few weeks to months to happen, as you also need to slightly ignore it, which isn't easy when you first experience it.

How loud is your tinnitus at the moment, if your in a room with the TV or Radio on can you hear it ? or only when in a quiet room or sleeping ?

You might also want to get advice from a private clinic or have a private hearing test. If you live in the South East or Kent area, I use Regain Hearing. Other good clinics are around in the U.K. also.

Hi Dazza & Forum members. My T is up and down and I would class it as severe. My doctor only discusses treatments on the phone and is hopeless. He offers little empathy and says to get on with it. I have another telephone appointment on 28th and I’m asking him for cognitive therapy! Do you think (or any other forum members think I will get this help? I waited 2years for a ENT appointment.

Looking forward to hearing from you

My ENT Consultant appointments at the local hospital are 16+Mths for Urgent, my case file with the hospital has been closed, as my hearing is pretty good. They just gave me some print outs from the BTA about relaxation and deep breathing exercises and they say it should go away naturally, they don't really want to get involved in Tinnitus, unless you have serious hearing loss. Cognitive therapy appointments may happen for some people, but, it is 2-4 Years booked up, often in many areas. My MRI scan has been refused & they are at done private costs at my local NHS.

My tinnitus is quite brutal also, it stays the same volume. My doctors are quite good, but, they can only do so much, I am trying different meds, to see if it can calm it down, so far nothing has worked, I have private clinic appointments that are trying to help, my tinnitus as well. I am doing all the masking & trying to ignore it, but, like many people, it's damn annoying. Even if I have picked up a little bit of hearing damage or aging, the brain is going crazy on it. The other thing is covid jabs, which seems to suggest they have caused a lot of problems with many people & I could be in that category as well, as overall my hearing is pretty good, but, It did start from loud noise exposure, when I was young, so maybe my brain is the way it is & loud noise is the cause of mine & then add in the natural aging.

Most doctors don't understand it unless they are suffering with it. The 'No Cure' & live with it, is used to much and to try and mask it, I don't think they understand how loud it is and the brain will often not switch off from it, so it causes exhausting, trying to blank it out.

Is there a pattern to why your tinnitus goes up & down ? & do you have any hearing loss or perfect hearing ?.

I’m 72 fit as a butchers dog. 20% loss in left ear. I’m convinced it’s not related to hearing loss in my case. I’ve had no alcohol for 3 years just in case. If I get a panic day I take 40mg of a panic medication ….ends with lol ? Anxiety is what makes my T worse and I’m anxious because of the constant high pitch jet engine in my brain. The only meds I can rely on are sleeping tablets which I get 2 a week of my GP. I get vivid dreams which wake me up with spiked Tinnitus …this stays chronic until I can have a deep meaningful sleep (maybe 1 day a week. I’m not depressed so anti depresents are not for me as I want to be in control. Had T 40 years but bad for the last 3. I crave for good days which inexplicably I do get now and then for some reason but mostly it’s pretty bad and impossible to ignore. I’ve now removed my hearing aid from my right ear as it’s doing nothing whatsoever. Left HA works a treat though and had it for 12 months NHS. I know it won’t kill me but it greatly affects my flight & fight response. It’s nothing more than over reacting NEURONS in my brain (in my case ) I will maybe go private for cognitive therapy. Thanks for the feedback and good luck.

Hi, in addition to the excellent advise that Dazza has already given, as you navigate your way through the various types of treatments that may or may not work for you (check out the ‘tinnitus treatments’ section of the tinnitus uk website), I would also highly recommend joining a face to face support group where you can meet people who are experienced in managing their tinnitus and this may give you a few ideas of what to try, and also might give you comfort in knowing that many people with tinnitus do learn to manage it and the associated anxiety around it. All the best
